so there I was,
doing odd jobs involving gelcoat, waiting for curing
into the marina came this lovely looking racer with two blokes looking like they had been thhru' it. The wind as it was and the tight berth caused a couple of re-trys which was'nt getting any better for them, as they were very close by I offered to take a line on the fingerberth, second attempt at positioning - only a small racing / folding prop - they were just about there. I took stern and bow lines - put a turn on - leaving matey to free to join me, cool - we eased her in under ropes. ''OK mate'' - '' YEAH SPOT ON THATS LOVELY'' I go to knees to cleat off proper -slight lean forward and............
Fatal error, I forgot I had h/h vhf in pouch chest pocket of jacket, skipper shouted NO, NO, - wasse mean its perfect thinks I, looking down to see the radio fade to grey under a light flurry of bubbles. £200 quid set, gone just like that.
So in saving mateys gelcoat and avoiding potential harm to other boats, the damage gods were unhappy, they wanted an offering of somesort today in that location at that time, kinda pre ordained and I messed with their schedule so they took my poor little radio.
I was wondering if any of you guys had any similar experiences?

He he he! Well described. It's going to happen to me one day because I'm chuckling at the story. Reminds of when a bloke fell through the slats on the jetty. I laughed. Same thing happened to me the following day.

Sad that!

Is there any chance that it could be recovered? If it can be recovered and thoroughly washed in fresh water, then dried out in the airing cupboard for a few days, even a week or three, it just MIGHT work again. It would depend on what type it is, what kind of components were used, probably a new battery and a lot of luck. If it was £200 it must have been quite a good one so I would have a go, you have nothing to lose.......Admittedly, it is a remote chance but worth a try.....

yeah, although its only in around 15 foot mlws, waiting for that combo of hot sunny day and the right low water will probably put it out of 'recoverable condition's ' reach.
Lanyard yes of course , while sailing
listening in on your deck and relying on your velcro..............
well thats my lesson for you lot to learn from eh!
but what I am really interested in is if there are any similar 'spooky' events in the tank?
Is this sort of incidence at all common?
Has your do-gooding / situation remedy, caused you grief as 'heavenly payback' when things were due to go awry for someone?

On the downriver side of Mapledurham lock (on the Thames) on the waiting jetty. I was on the boat; SWMBO was on the jetty. Passed £400 camera to SWMBO; I thought she'd got it..... and in it went. Insurance coughed up though /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

if it was 'on' when it fell in it will be knackered for sure, probably knacker anyway ........ a holster with extension mike is a good option - apart from the waterproof floating ones of course.

I noticed a yacht listing on it's mooring. I knew the owner (not local) so rang him. "Could you check it out for me? he asked.
I armed myself with a torch to look around the bilges and rowed out. Looked around and found that the list was caused by the new installation of central heating. The extra gas bottle and battery were all in the same, starboard, locker.
As I stepped back into my tender I heard "plop".
Maglite torch gorn.
I only buy cheap torches these days.

Riding a motorcycle through thick traffic, I noticed a car with brake smoke and smell from rear wheels. As the queue stopped altogether, I pulled alongside to intending suggest to the young lady that maybe the handbrake was on.

As I lent over to the driver's window, and before I could speak, she looked at me in complete startled horror, revved up, let in the clutch and rammed the stationary car in front.

I followed a fiesta for a mile or two and noticed every time he braked fluid was gushing out from his rear brake drum area.

I flashed lights, beeped horn and gesticulated that he should pull in. The guy gets out and is coming towards me with kill in his eyes, some fast talking from me stopped me getting head butted I think!

Makes me wonder if I would do it again now.....

Same sort of thing happened to me. Very expensive sunglasses as birthday present (Maui Jim), pushed onto top of head whilst sorting someone else's problem. Suddenly discovered no more MJ's, didnt even have the luck to see them go! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
