Tall Ships Races 2017 made a stop in Turku, which was absolutely packed during the event. The banks of River Aura were filled with these beautiful ships and as the weather co-operated for a change, no less than half a million people visited the site during the four day event.

I managed to get a berth just a couple of hundreds of meters from the river, which was made a no-go zone for leisure boats. One morning I got up early and packed all my gear into the dinghy with a plan to cross the estuary and make a landing just outside of the exclusion zone.

I didn't get very far dressed in dark clothes, driving a (black) dinghy full of pointy gear, before being politely directed elsewhere by a RIB patrolling the mouth of the river...

Anyway, got there in the end and was glad to be the early, before the crowds arrived, to witness the morning routines aboard the ships.

I got some drone footage when they were leaving, but that's still a bit of WIP.

What a lovely video. Thank you fo sharing this. What's the camera?

Thank you! It's a Panasonic Lumix GH5 with a Metabones adapter so I can use my Canon lenses. It's offering some fantastic features in a consumer prized package, very happy with it so far.

Do you use a video tripod?

On this video I did for shots in which I used the slider. You can see the sideways camera movement on these. For others I used a monopod which is more convenient as you move around.

When using the GH5 with the original/compatible lenses, I'm told it has an amazing image stabilisation as it can use both the stabilisation on the lens and the body. Also the autofocus is a nice feature, but it's not the best out there.

Interesting. I have a Canon 7D MkII with a number of lenses and was wondering how to use this for video. Again, really impressed with your vid.

Looking at the specs for the 7D mk ii, it appears to have the dual pixel autofocus which at least on the latest Canon cameras is considered as one of the best.

Also seems to be doing full hd at 60 fps so it should work well for videos as well.

Wow that was beautiful, allmost surreal to see so many masts at that location in the 21th century...

Lovely video. Slowing everything down gave it a commercial feel and being able to use your longer canon lenses on the Lumix allowed you to get some great people shots.

It's interesting what you say about the stabilisation on the Lumix. Quite a long time ago now I bought a Panasonic HC-X900 camcorder which has built in stabilisation and doesn't it make a difference. I use it for casual filming when I don't want to or can't take a load of gear out with me.

I think they will have to put you on the local tourist board payroll :)

Henry :)

As good as dslr's are for shooting videos, it's sort of funny how far ahead regular camcorders from a decade ago are in terms of autofocus and image stabilisation. Compromises, compromises...

I've used these slo mo's for atmospheric sequences in between regular ones in my vlog type videos, and sometimes they work well. But you learn something new on every edit (hopefully :)).

And thank you Gentlemen for the kind comments!
