Yesterday I happened to see the private yacht "Timoneer" moored right in our city center here. According to the website www.timoneer.org she has been on a voyage from the USA to Sweden. I took some pictures, too.
The boat, eh ship, is realy big. The mainmast is 50 meters high. But would you like to have her if you had the money? Is she beautiful or just big?

And does anybody know who owns her?

Here are my pictures:

Don't know, sorry. She is based in Boston but spends a lot of her time over here, I believe she is heading back soon and will probably stop off at Gunwharf on the way back.

Re: Why not

I'm sure you are right. However I can also think of some areas where the options are less. I definitely know some very nice places/coves he will never get into. (Of course he could anchor outside and take the dinghy...oh well....). But he had to use the engine to get into central Stockholm. I don't need to do that at least. :)

We come down the the raw facts, all boats are a compromise, all boats are very personal/subjective. Each vessel has its own intended use, not suitable for everybody

A friend of mine has a boat that is 45 feet long and daren't leave his berth without prearanging the next overnight stop.

My own experience over many years with a 28foot boat is that I very rarely make a booking anywhere unless for a meeting. this means I can come and go whenever I like. You could not do that with that lovely boat. You also could not visit say, Newtown and have a meal on board watching the sunset. But then I could not get to West Indies or cross oceans. With that size boat you could quite happily go to the West Indies and other wonderful places. But do you have the time? Dream on eh?
Lovely to see it. I just hope its owner has the time and resources to appreciate and use what he has got.

Re: Why not

<<<Money and big boats have one thing in common. Both offer more options.>>>

I quite agree. So, if as some forumites seem to be inferring a big boat has its disadvantages when compared to a smaller boat, then if one is a superyacht owner and feels the need for a a smaller boat, or even a small fleet of them, well why not just buy them (as many large vessel owners do).

By all accounts he has - he is retired and has been the owner of a long string of yachts of assorted sizes.

Re: Why not

You are dead right about having the options, no argument at all, but no one boat will answer all requirements, they all have limitations. It is good to hear the owner of that lovely vessel does have the time to enjoy it. Good luck to him, hope he enjoys his retirement

Re: The beauty of size is

that if you can't "get in somewhere" you can anchor off in great comfort, carry a large enough tender to get ashore with a dry arse and have enough bods onboard to keep an anchor watch.

Other advantages include... Having enough room to get away from everyone else onboard when the mood takes you. Having enough water. Comfy beds. Room for all your toys. Good passage times without strain. Your wife will talk to you.

The downside of it is the cost and the fact you can't nip off on your own.

So if anyone out there is finding owning a large yacht a disappointment and a burden, I'll have it and they can have my 25fter.
