Beaulie River is a bit of an oddity in that the river and the river bed are owned by Lord Montegue of Beaulie. The best option is to go up to Bucklers Hard and take one of the options up there.
The first is a short term visitors berth on the Marina there. Harbour Masters are usually helpful and pleasant and they often have spaces avaialble on the T pontoons for larger stuff. Gives you the option for a nice short walk to Bucklers Hard and the Master Builder for a bit of lunch of just a pint in nice surroundings. Can be very busy at W/E in the summer season.
Another option is Visitors piles just NE of the Marina up the river by a few hundred yards. They are for and aft moorings and you will need your own lines plus a tender if you want to go ashore. These are controlled by the Marina and the HM comes out to take the fees etc...
It is possible to anchor at the very start of the river to the south of the channel, but delths here vary and a good % of it dries at low water, so pick your time carefully/ The rest of the river is mainly populated by permanent mooring bouys which are not allocated for visitors. The sailing club used to have a few they would let you stop on, but I don't know if this is still the case.
Beaulie is one of the nicest spots in the Solent, and has been a favourite of mine for many years. Well worth a visit, so enjoy.
Its a couple of years since I left the Solent, jez, but we always used to pick up a mooring buoy downriver of Bucklers Hard, some of which were designated for visitors. Have they gone now? I also seem to remember that the marina charges were a rip off for a short stay
There's also the option of the Royal Southampton YC moorings further downstream although I'm not sure what the rules are for visitors
The white ones (i think they are white) just before you make the turn N up the river proper, and the buoys between Bucklers and the village itself - these are allocated as permanant but the HM will fix you up on one as he will know who is away etc.
Used these lots and I have never had the problem that I hear other mention that you get settled in, pay up and the 'owner' steams up wanting 'his' buoy back........
I dont think anybody has mentioned that you will be charged even for merely anchoring in the river, let alone using one of their buoys. a real rip-off. I wont stay there anymore, just motor up the river occasionally to enjoy the views.
Newton Creek is free for anchoring, although sometime National Trust will call and ask for a contribution.
Mixed views on this one. As has been noted, the Beaulieu Harbourmaster does at least have the legal right to charge for anchoring, as the river bed belongs to Lord Montague. Marina and moorings are expensive, even by Solent standards but most mooring holders (me included) willingly pay up as the price for keeping the river relatively unspoiled.
You may occasionally be able to moor on a buoy further upriver from Buckler's Hard, which is very peaceful, and you can get up as far as Bailey's Hard at most times though I'd avoid it an hour either side of LW, particularly at Springs.
It's a beautiful spot; I hope you enjoy your visit. Avoid the pub (see posts passim /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)
Yes Newtown is now free but they do ask for a contribution, this happened because someone took them to court saying they had no right to charge to anchor and won but Beaulieu is different and yes you have to pay to anchor, we had a short stay on a bouy recently and were charged £10 I think for a thirty two foot boat /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
