Beaulieu food advice

Evening all,

We are thinking of heading to Beaulieu for a couple of nights. We like to eat out each night but after a bad experience at Bucklers Hard, we eat on board at Beaulieu. This weekend is our wedding anniversary and Swmbo is expecting...... And by that I don't mean she's up the duff!!

Has anyone eaten at the Master Arms recently and is it worth another go? Or....... Can you recommend something better within easy walking distance?

Can't vouch for evening dining Paul but we had a very nice lunch at Monty's in Beaulieu village. Not really easy walking distance (we biked it and it took us prob 10-15 mins) but worth a cab ride perhaps. Nice place with very friendly and attentive staff.

We eat in the pub on a regular basis......and find the food good.....but it is very busy at this time of year with Dutch/Germans/French (I have just been down to my boat in the marina and there are lots of foreign visitors berthed tonight). As they don't have transport they normally take over the place. We always enjoy the restaurant at Bucklers but check on Saturdays in case of weddings/functions. Otherwise it's a hike to Beaulieu to Monty's or a taxi to the Turfcutters or East End Arms. .....both typical forest pubs (3-4 miles). East End Arms has a nice restaurant but you will need to book. If you like spending money get a cab to Limewood (£25)!!!!!! .......they do have a pad for helicopters if you don't mind "flying in"!!
 
Ate at the master builders this evening and it was ok. Not great tho.

Sat outside and ate from bar menu. Food was ok but not brilliant, service was rubbish, staff were pre occupied and border line rude. I have lived within 3 miles for over three years, first time I have been there and won't rush back for food. Drink sat on the grass in the sun yes but not food.

I know the restaurant is a different menus and much more fancy but not my bag....

Haven't eaten at monty's for a while but it was very good last time..

Turfcutters is my local drinking pub and love it but it's a forest pub in the traditional sense and not somewhere for candle light romantic dining.

Master builders prob worst pub food on the solent especially considering the price. Master builders has been consistently crp for last 10 years or so. Monty's OK but expensive. (Risotto is pretty amazing and food is generally good to be fair.)
Hotel is great (might have a Michelin star now) but you pay for it.

That's not good to hear, I have just booked to stay there for 3 night in a couple of weeks.
 
Recent 'bouillabaisse' from masterbuilder bar menu was so bad it would have been.more successful as the comedy cabaret. The restaurant at the Montagu we found Ok - attentive staff but food middling at best. Room is a but of a barn when 90% empty as it was didn't help.

Your evangelical zeal is admirable Phil, though I tend to the view best not to raise expectations too high. I would say solid, but with the bonus that you certainly won't feel ripped off as you might elsewhere.

Went there for lunch yesterday and all 5 of us commented on the good food and friendly service. We had the burger, steak sandwich and an egg mayo sandwich, all of which were good. I'd consider myself a bit of a foodie (as are the folks I was with), and would think it was prett good pub food (we ate outside , from the "Yachtsmans bar" menu. The only issue outside were the wasps :(
 
Beaulieu is somewhere we haven't been to yet by boat. I understand mooring there is pricey which I'd be happy to pay if there was somewhere walkable to get a decent pint and food. After the last visit to the Master Builders Arms (by car) it was so bad we vowed never to go back.

Bucklers Hard - not sure it is that bad, personally.
OP- just check there is not some vast wedding party there..;)
 
Morning all, thanks for the advice. Just returned from a blowy weekend! Ate on Sunday evening in the Master Arms from the bar menu, it all honesty it's was ok. We've had worse (also had a lot better) but it was certainly better than our last visit. Ate at Montys in Beaulieu on Monday and that was very nice........ But on returning to the hamble, still enjoyed the Whyte Harte the most :)
 
Cannot believe people are slamming the master Builders, took clients there for lunch during the Jo Class racing, lovely food, excellent service and not just a pub and I do love my food so know when something has been cooked properly.

You'll probably find they went there last some years ago!
 
I live five minutes away, and lived here most of my life, the Master Builders rely on a captive client base, the food and service has only ever been average at best and sometimes abysmal, the Folly ought to sell them tickets so they can learn how it should be done.IMHO.
