Beaulieu food advice

Beaulieu is somewhere we haven't been to yet by boat. I understand mooring there is pricey which I'd be happy to pay if there was somewhere walkable to get a decent pint and food. After the last visit to the Master Builders Arms (by car) it was so bad we vowed never to go back.

Not pricey. It's actually cheaper than Bembridge and the same as Yarmouth.

Thanks for that. I thought I'd remembered a thread on here a while back about it being the most expensive visitor mooring on the Solent. My memory is obviously not what it was :)

And the Whyte Harte in Hamble - Best Sunday roast anywhere ever. Great pub. Will be back there Thursday :)

That's not good to hear, I have just booked to stay there for 3 night in a couple of weeks.

Our experiences seem to be different from most it appears.

We stay at the Master Builders quite regularly and really enjoy it. Rooms are "quaint" (read low ceilings!), especially upstairs in the old building (the new annex is better but more modern) and if you like a shower that you can stand in make sure you contact them and request this specifically otherwise you'll be washing your hair in the bath. Food in the restaurant is very good - not tried the pub menu.

The guy that runs the bar (and the rest of the hotel most of the time - can't remember his name) is one of the friendliest, most accommodating members of staff I've come across.

Don't panic until you've tried it. We have been back twice and the only reason we're not staying again this August is because it's booked.

Thanks for the info, im there week after next for 4 days, will report back after our stay.

Can't vouch for evening dining Paul but we had a very nice lunch at Monty's in Beaulieu village. Not really easy walking distance (we biked it and it took us prob 10-15 mins) but worth a cab ride perhaps. Nice place with very friendly and attentive staff.
L
:)

I ate at the hotel in the village recently - really nice and simply took the tender on the tide down rather than a taxi which added to the fun :)

If you do decide to go elsewhere (Turfcutters is decent pub & grub) leave plenty of time for getting taxis. They seem to be few and far between at the best of times and on a weekend in the summer you may have to a long time. Book ahead if poss.

We went in the Master Builders last night for a pint. It was about 6pm Sunday and so it had quietened down.

I ordered some chips to snack on whilst I had my pint.

Anyway, when I went to get my second pint I asked about my chips, but as I stood there, the fuse to the bar electrics blew, and I was promised my chips soon. The bar manager very kindly didn't charge me for my pint.

Then I asked the waiter/service guy about my chips, and he said that the kitchen had no paperwork for my order. All the while the few other food orders for the other customers were arriving.

After a couple more reminders, the chips arrived.

Just over 50 minutes after I ordered them.

We've been coming here many years, and I just can't work out how they so consistently maintain the same friendly, homely, but totally haphazard standards of service through so many different generations of staff/managers/owners.

Nice pint of Doom Bar though, and the chips were freshly cooked.

We ate dinner on the boat. Otherwise I may still be sat there waiting for it!
