How much axial movement is normal on a jabsco type sea water pump? Just done an impeller change and noticed there was some obvious movement of the shaft against the bearings. I guess this may be ok if the bearings are ball bearing type? I assume if it was significant the seals would have failed and there would be water leakage..?

I don't think you should have much axial play in any bearings definately not roller bearings. What type of engine is this pump fitted to? How is the drive to the pump (gear, slot cut in end of shaft, belt, etc) Some drive types cannot cope with any play.

On that model of pump there should be no play at all as there are 2 bearings to support the shaft and a mechanical type seal with a ceramic face, which is £££££ for what it is.

Blimey just checked the price for that ceramic seal, you're not wrong, it is serious £££! Must be 'special' ceramic for that price...

Hmmm probably need to think about overhauling both pumps then, but hopefully not this season. I guess the worst that could happen would be the failure of the ceramic seal, and that would result in water loss from the central drain points (external leakage would be manageable, but would not want seawater in the oil!)

Well I checked the other engines pump today - had approx 4 to 5mm of play! I think I either need a new/reconditioned pump or a repair kit...

Jabsco no longer stock my pump, Volvo want ££££ (why am I not surprised!) - does anyone know any good suppliers of reconditioned raw water pumps?

Cheers
Chris
