You get far more time at sea if you are not always welding up a steel hull. :)

Talking of steel and scrap, a few years ago I was taking peeps across to Ceuta by yacht and we saw the old Ark Royal being towed off to the Turkish scrapper. That night a west gale blew and the hulk threatened to overtake the tug so they spent the night reversing course and towing it back out into the Atlantic. So when we sailed north again the next day, we saw it going back in again. Perhaps the old lady didnt like missing a run ashore in Gib......

It perhaps depends on whose version of the IRPCS you're looking at? To resolve a query I had over anchoring, having regularly heard US Yachties claim that the IRPCS states "you don't need to display an anchor light in a 'designated' anchorage" I downloaded a US version to compare with my UK Version and found there to be extra/additional clauses in the US Version of the booklet.

Following your comment above I deleted my earlier post, as your comment seems to suggest that Gibratar is not on the straits.
But reading Wikipedia it would seem that Gibraltar marks the eastern END of the straits so as such is actually on the edge
That suggests that your post is misleading because that means that the straits are also between Morroco & Gibraltar, which I believe IS a British colony
So could anyone who knows these things confirm/deny please

Well I found that over six hundred transits across the Straits and helping to produce a pilot book helps. Sadly no longer in production, The Straits Sailing Handbook was the defining guide to the area for twenty years. Im very pleased with the part I played in that. So Im sure there may be someone around who knows the Straits better than me, but I doubt it. ;)

I don’t think Gibraltar has ever been a colony. I think It is a British Overseas Territory or was.

Googling the definition of "colony" gives one:-
country or area under the full or partial political control of another country and occupied by settlers from that country,

So the next question is:
Does Gibraltar fit that definition?
If so, then it could be called a colony, could it not?
I do not know - please advise

With the greatest respect, your question is now changing. Gibraltar, clearly is situated at the Eastern end of the Straits and slightly east of the mountain on the African side, Jebel Musa. These impressive geographical features form the legendary 'Pillars of Hercules'. Not only a classical feature of ancient man, but in recent times an epic name for a local very sucessful Sailing School.

As you have looked at Wikipedia..... you will have seen that the Straits flows for its fifty odd mile length between Morocco and Spain. A body of water I have enjoyed using for many years. I can recommend it to you to broaden your sailing horizons. :encouragement:

And no, Gibraltar is not a colony.

So we have established that Gibraltar is on the straits of Gibraltar ( first part of your post omitted for clarity)
now we need to establish if it is a colony

Does Great Britain hold sovereignty over Gibraltar ? --Yes! I believe so-- Am I correct?

One could then argue that it also fits the definition of colony:-

Country or area under the full or partial political control of another country and occupied by settlers from that country,
Hell of a lot of Brits there, & we certainly give Spain the hump politically !!!!!!

Yes it does, it could and it was. Between 1713 when Spain ceded it to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht, and the 1980s when it and others were renamed. I didn’t want to argue with the Cap’n as I had wrongly assumed that Gibraltar was as close to the Straits of Gibraltar as, er, Dover was to the Straits if Dover.

All pretty irrelevant really but one might guess that I have nothing better to do than wind capnsensible up.
Would be much more fun if we could do it over a pint in a club bar somewhere
Gibralter preferably - but I never got that far because the wife got fed up on the way, got on a plane & flew home.
So that was the end of that dream. We had intended to get there to celebrate our anniversary. In the end I spent it stuck in Lowestoft with a bilge full of diesel & she spent it playing golf :nonchalance:
