BBQ Advice

Hi
My siblings and i are planning to get dad a BBQ for his Jeannea 40 for Christmas and I was wondering whether anyone has any advice. So far the only ones I can get info on are the Magma products but there are mixed reviews.

If anyone has had good/bad experiences with BBQ makes please let me know. Also if anyone knows of a good website/store for supplying.

We have a Magma gas version and find it excellent though we have adapted it with a separate regulator and hose connection (bought from West Marine USA) to run off a full sized cylinder as the removeable type Gaz throwaway ones are expensive. Prior to this we had a Magma charcoal one, also excellent but we prefer the gas one simply because it can be ready for use in minutes. The BBQ can be used as an oven and we use it quite often for full blown roast dinners, the advantage being the heat is outside and not heating up the cabin.

I have two, a stainless steel circular one which uses charcoal - I have had it for many years and used it for caravanning mounted on a pole, and a Force 10 large 'log' which runs off gas - this one came with my boat. Although I prefer a 'proper' charcoal BBQ, as far as using one on a boat, the gas option is much better - it heats up quickly (and also cools down more quickly with less mess to clear up) If conditions get a bit dodgy you can turn the gas off and that's the end of it. Putting out burning charcoal in a hurry can be a bit of a worry!

I have used a Magma charcoal bbq for the past 6 years. It is a well designed and engineered product - at that price it ought to be - and I have no grumbles.

I only use mine for bbq on the beach and on the canal bank, even though I have the extension arm, which fits into a windlass socket to keep it outboard.

I have no real worry about using it on the boat, but agree that gas makes more sense, for the quoted reasons.

If they could only make gas bbqs smoke and smell like charcoal, they would have a real winner

I very much agree with your last point!

A couple of years ago, at anchor in the Caribbean on a charter yacht I used a charcoal BBQ. As I lifted the lid to check what was going on inside, a slight swell developed and the sausages rolled off into the sea. The design of my current gas BBQ would make that much less likely to occur as it has raised sides on all but the front.

I have a Cobb charcoal barbecue, which are about 90 pounds from various places, but if you go through campersreunited.com you can get a £15 discount.

It's quite compact, round and with a lid, will roast as well and has a separate vegetable moat under the grill plate. I've rigged up a mount so that I can have attached to the transom over the swim platform and have found it to be very good.

Welcome to the forum; after owning several boat BBQ's I would advise you look for the following points:

Get one with a lid that can be used as an oven, also very handy if the wind gets up or a sudden shower.

Make sure is has a bit of depth, food rolling hot off the grill is no fun.

Gas fired, it takes less time and less cleaning.

Plate should have a flat tray with drain for too much oil / fat, and a grill section about one third of the total area.

My son has just brought us a Cobb back from Oz. We have found it a brilliant bit of kit, can use it almost everywhere as it can be picked up and moved whilst alight.
He advises putting beer in the moat to flavour and tenderise the food, apparently that's the best thing to do with Australian beer!
