Hi. was reading manual for maintenance on a baystar Hydraulic steering and read that that it is imperative to remove ,clean and grease the steering bar and then insert it in the engine mount. Can the bar be removed by removing nut from the steering ram only? And there are 2 grease nipples on my suzuki that i assumed are there to grease the said bar. am i correct? Also should i lightly grease the bar that enters and comes out of the steering barrel when turning?

I wouldn't remove the steering bar just to grease it
In the past I have just greased in situ. Not wanting to disturb the 'end' seals really
The grease nipples should cope
Oh! just to check!
Do you mean the actual 'rod' that sits in the hydraulic cylinder?

The actual rod that sits in the HYDRAULIC CYLINDER that goes in and out in barrel( where there is baystar logo) should be greased or not from the outside?
The steering bar if im not mistaken attaches to the hydraulic ram and enters in the outboard where there are the nipples. I also taught as you that if i put grease in nipples it should be ok but im not sure and a bit confused. Thanks mate.

Kerist I am more cofused
Smee not thee, I think its locdown syndrom
Just put grease on the rod that sits in the cylinder that 'goes in and out'
Yer mean from side to side?

Surely grease on a hydraulic cylinder rod will be wiped off by the seals?

Yes correct
Thats why I said just stick some on the outside
Its kinda pointless but some does stay put
But I am still confused as to which bit Karnic is refering too
If He reads through His manual that that rod needs removing regurlarly to grease, it doesn't sound right
More likely to bugger up the seals that way
Think I just gave Karnic a bum steer!

There is the hydraulic cylinder with the shafts that goes in and out. Not really worth greasing as it's not going to corrode and as mentioned the seals will just wipe it off.
There is also a stabiliser bar that slides into the steering tube of the outboard to stop the ram rotating. That's the one that may need greasing? If it's a slack fit then it's not really going to cause an issue.
Outboard steering tubes are steel and can jam up whatever slides through it.
The large nut on the end of the steering tube will release it all to allow for de gunging.

Sorry for my English and way of explaining.
Please find picture of the 4 rods ( A,B,A1 and B2). I am assuming i have to grease B and B1. 1st question. Should A and A1 be greased or? If i understood well i have to remove rod from B side by releasing locknut from A and grease B and inside of B. Am i correct? Appreciate your help and im willing to learn slowly:)

Dont grease A
B can
To be honest its not needed to be done all that often
Were you having trouble with too much fluid in the steering pump lately
Or was that another post by someone else?

Yes . i never had a boat with hydraulic always mechanical. i installed this one and it was my first time. So re rod B? Should that rod be greased through nipples or else i take out rod out? Wouldnt do it often although manual states yearly but im assuming (not sure) that by putting grease through nipples would be enough. Re overfilling or air issue was told that after a couple of turns air would migrate to helm working its way out.

B and B1 to be greased as they slide inside the outboards horizontal steering tube.
An accumulation of grease that's gone hard, some salt and rust of the steering tube can give steering a hard time after many years of neglect.
Would also take a great many years of neglect and an older engine to get that bad.
You can feel it on the steering if it's getting stiff and needs re greasing.

Thanks Rappey. What is the best method( procedure) to use in order to grease B and B1? Will i unscrew out the lock nut near A and slide rod out or? If i may ask also are the grease nipples on the suzuki outboard specifically for greasing this tube? Im referring to these ones in picture
