Bayliner Avanti 32/34\'

I'm thinking about buying one from the states (1990/91) any info on these would be appreciated.
Flying has got to expensive.

Re: Bayliner Avanti 32/34\'

Took one of those from Stavanger to Oslo (Norway) in May 1990 (New boat).
2 x 270 OMC as far as I recall, with Genny. Fast but thirsty!

Quite nice weather, but got a bit worse round Lista, which is a shallow stretch of water and seas gets steep quickly. ( 2 m + waves )

Boat felt OK and did not cause any concern with respect to seakeeping at speeds in the high 20's. No excessive slamming, but relatively soft. Good all round visibility. Small question around the size of lights (looked like candles) and I would have changed them to more substantial ones. Sociable with good seating arrangements on port side with U-shaped sofa with large table, ajacent to helm position, which was OK, but not brilliant. OK space for charts and space on table to fold out if and when required. Travelled at speed, but did not have any problems with controlling chart or anything onboard. Lacked some trays for compasses, chart storage etc., but pending of how you plan to cruise, there should be space down below for this stuff. We were two onboard, so had plenty of space to spread this stuff in the mid cabin and only kept three charts at helm at any given time. (where we came from, current chart and following chart).

Suprised to find under post journey inspection (approx. half way, in Mandal - South of Norway) that three curtain rails had fallen down (screws pulled out) and that the board where main switches were located on the port side was knocked loose (Not inside control panel). Cause was poor fastening in the laminate with very few self tapping screws. Fixed the board easily and did a detailed inspection of whole boat, including engineroom and electrics (did not like the idea of loose switches etc. onboard). No further problems and proceeded to Oslo with no other incidents or things falling off or down..

Other observations was that although well equipped, the seat cushions were quite thin. Did not test the galley, so cannot give any other information other than to say that it looked well equipped, with microwave, mixer etc. Ice maker and fridge on aft deck.

Hope this helps a bit, but let me know if I have forgotten some information that you'd like to have.

Re: Bayliner Avanti 32/34\'

Have you looked at the true cost of bringing one over.It will not be cheaper I suspect by the time you have paid for cost of locating/shipping VAT and import duties.Maybe best to find one here it may even be in better condition......and remember the cost of running them petrols @ WOT possibly 30 litres per hour each

Just lets say the best boat in the known universe starts with the letter P

90 X .75p = O my God

Re: Bayliner Avanti 32/34\'

question?

Bayliners have had a lot of bad press in the past, is there good reason for this or is it just that they are American? I have looked at sevaral and you seem to get a lot of boat for your money! I am still considering buying a 2958 command bridge or similar but it seems that everyone says do not buy a Bayliner! Of course if money was no object we would all be blasting around in Sunseekers

Re: Bayliner Avanti 32/34\'

Quality of fittings is definitely an issue. Also, dissatisfied owners tend to be more vociferous, and they'll be more numerous with big-volume manufacturers primarily building for first-time or part-time users.

If money was no object...we'd have a sunseeker? I think not. Nice cheap narrow strips of teak, just a single generator, just a single aircon plant, and all this on the predator 74...

Re: Bayliner Avanti 32/34\'

I think 70 lph at WOT is more accurate with 40 lph at around 20 knots. This is from experience of owning a boat powered by a small block V8.

As a Bayliner owner I feel qualified to write about the Bayliner/Binliner debate. Alot of the knockers have never owned or even been on one, they are just repeating the stories told by others that have probably also never owned one. Bayliners, (I am talking about secondhand), are value for money. They are cheaper than similar sized boats from other builders. The quality of the fittings are not as good but then this is why you are not paying as much.

Compare the boats for yourself and talk to other owners. The following site is a great resource for Bayliner owners or anyone looking for info on Bayliners. http://pub12.ezboard.com/bbocweb

If money no object a sunseeker,I think not.People with real wedge I suspect park at the other end of the marina as far away as possible. As for the B...........r I had a look at a few and it was the rather obvious cracks along the chine which had been sprayed over with paint that put me off.All of the boats I looked at were 5/10 years old so maybe things have improved .

Re: Bayliner Avanti 32/34\'

I previously owned a Bayliner, and it was a fine boat. I got alot for my money....and never had any problems with the boat.

I was going to buy a 34 Avanti, but I had two of them surveyed and neither of them would pass a survey. SO the only advice I can give to you would be that if you are going to buy a Bayliner out of the US, you need to contact BoatUS either via email or on their website and get the name of a Professional Vessel Surveyor in the area where you are buying this boat and have it thoroughly surveyed before you buy a boat that may turn out to be a "pig in a poke". If you purchase without the survey....it will be too late. BoatUS insures boats in the US and requires a survey and they maintain a list of highly qualified surveyors around the US.

For what its worth...if I was going to sell my sailboat and buy a powerboat... I would probably look for another Bayliner.

If you want to get comparative prices around the US, check on boats for sale on http://www.boattraderonline.com You will find thousands of boats around the US for sale.

Reality is the cause of all stress!!

Re: Bayliner Avanti 32/34\'

DO NOT buy a PETROL driven sports cruiser unless you are a man of great means !!
Better to buy a slower diesel driven cruiser for the same money - it is not necessary to go tearing around at 30kts.
I've nothing against Bayliners - the newer models are excellent value (except for petrol) and their larger (diesel) boats even better.
