Bavaria 42

Well said that man and factual comments based on experience rather than prejudice!

I now await the reply that yours was 2001 and they don't make them now like they did in those days!!

Ah but that was a 2001 boat. They don't make them like that anymore.

I just didn't want you to have to wait too long... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just read your 2003 post. Rivetting stuff!

I crossed that Atlantic as crew in 2004 on a Jeanneau 452 and we had a ruptured water tank under a forward bunk (inferior and thin stainless). The joinery was fillet bonded so we had to break the cabin apart to get the tank out (it was a 2002 model) - By fillet bonding maybe the joinery was too rigid to deal with hull flexing? We encountered a F7/8 from Bermuda-Azores but running, so I suspect more comfortable what you encountered. Even so, she slammed a LOT, alarmingly at times. In the end it was only the water tank and leaking deck vents that were problematic. Since then she has crossed the pond twice a year, every year. From what I hear she is still in good nick passing her yearly MCA coding.

I'm not at all sure that you can properly describe these boats as cheap. A standard Bav 42 (or 44?) Vision costs (incl vat) £136k delivered. However, that is very much a bare boat. I came to an all up price of not far short of £180k to equip it to cross the channel.

I keep my boat in The netherlands where they have a saying about Bavaria's: - "A nice boat - but do not go to sea in one"
They also offer a special stand for winter storage due to the hull flexing on the standard stand.

Bavaria in general

All very amusing, as ever!!!

Personally I think they are [--word removed--] boats for my sailing, and yes that statement is based on real involvement with the brand… Not just gossip over a pint or two at the bar.

But hey, basic specs are indeed very cheap, these boats do indeed have their place in market.

Would I own one, no.

I have a detailed specification sheet about 6 pages long to speciy the boat I wanted and the necessary work for charter coding. When I priced upthe Bav compared to a Dufour the final price was not much different yet the "headline" price suggested that the Bav would be considerably cheaper.

Have not done this exercise recently though be interested if others have.
