Chap is telling me that Bavaria made a 38 that is actually 41 feet, is that correct?
Say's his is the 41 foot version  News to me ???????

Quite a few circa 1999-2004 or so were significantly LOA than indicated..

The 34 was just a tad under 36, the 2002 36 is just under 38....

Hmmm, thanks for that. Seller is saying his is dearer because it's the rarer 41 foot model whereas most are 38, sounds unlikely to me!

I think it depends on which year, and the 38CC is different from the ordinary aft cockpit 38. When I looked at them the 38 was a little over 40 feet LOA, but not 41 feet. Lots of boats are only nominally the size written on side, for example my Jeanneau 45.2 is 46 feet 5 inches overall, but the hull is about 45 feet. A look at the Bavaria website shows the current 38 to be a little more than 38 feet overall, but with its hull length quoted as just 10.45 metres which I make about 34 feet 6 inches! (Some mistake surely?)

Nice boat... Not as solid as the pre 2000's... Is it still German Lloyds certified?
Don't know ?

Have you seen fireballs 37 up for sale?

I have had a week on board a identical boat.... Solid performer, Very nicely screwed together, good useable comfortable interior.

Excellent value.
Hadn't seen that, quite nice

Yes, my Bennie was 1'3" longer that the model suggested! However I think the Bav seller is just trying to justify why his boat is 10k dearer than others ;)

Might be if you include the pullpit and a fender off the back ? ;)

Otherwise - it's just over 40' ...

Interior looks similar to mine - but a lot more space ... they've also changed over to those (IMHO silly) lockers that you can't really get anything in...

IIRC, Bavaria yachts were produced with German Lloyds registry up to mid 2001 - so the one you're interested in is a little outside that.

Apparently our '99 Bav 38 is 39' 4" LOA. However, when we stayed at Lorient for a night earlier this year, when I told the girl in the capitainerie that we were a Bav 38, she suggested that we were 12.5 metres, so perhaps either there is a model which is that length or your man had been to Lorient before us.

The closest this page http://sailboatdata.com/view_builder.asp?builder_id=116 gives to a model at 41 feet is a 40 and a 42 Match.

Suspect that the advertiser is differentiating his 2002 boat from the previous 38 which went out of production in 2001. I have the original brochure for that model and it is 11.95m (38'8") and is a very different boat from the 2002 model, with twin aft cabins and two toilets. It was a development of an earlier 38 and a much bigger boat than the 37 of the same era (like mine and fireball's). The 2001 lineup had a 31, 34, 37, 38 and 42. In 2002 the lineup was 30, 34, 36, 38 and 42. The 34 and 42 were essentially the same, but new interiors and the others were new designs. As already noted the 36 was nearer 38' and the 38 was 40'! Who said Germans liked precision?

Confusing or what!

Yep really confusing, I hope the marinas aren't reading this but the 390 I had was 12.15m oa, or a shade over 40' (bad for marinas with price breaks at 40') Some would accept it as a 39 as it was a 390, but the 390 referred to the beam at 3.90m.

Thanks, as you say, clear as mud

I was told that the hull of the 2002+ 36 used the mould of the pre 2002 37 - it certainly looks to be the same when we moored up alongside one. The difference was in the deck mould and the fit out below. I liked some of the changes, but not others - like the short lockers... Overall I'm glad we had the 37!

There is a 1999 Bav 35 moored next to me at the moment. If you just looked at it in isolation you would think it was the same as my 37. However, having them side by side shows significant differences - shorter cockpit, narrower coamings, lower freeboard, different window placements. I have been inside and everything is slightly smaller, although much of the detail finishing is a bit neater. The owner bought it new (in preference to a Moody), but he paid about 20% more than I paid for mine 3 years later - such was the impact of Bavaria cost cutting and strength of the £ in that period. Explains in part why Bavaria were so successful in UK at the time, and perhaps why the boats make such good buys now.

I think our '99 38 was intended to just miss the 12 metre mark at 11.98 metres, which suits me fine.

The fit out is the same as the 38 Ocean and Exclusive in terms of quality and general design, although the Ocean has a few extras such as shallow drawers under the deckhead between the outboard saloon/galley lockers, which would be useful as there's quite a lot of dead space above the bookshelf/galley rail storage.

It's fair to say that I'm more than happy with the standard of the interior, which an Oyster owner and furniture maker also commented on being really rather nice and well above his expectations of a mass market boat.

The size and year thing is a bit crazy. There seem to be more variants of actual size, named size and layout than you can imagine, and those seemed to change year by year too.
