There is a down side of using the balance pipe except in emergencies.
If you have biological or water contamination in one side only by opening balance line you can contaminate both.
I log and put on a spread sheet literes into each tank and on previous boat I identified a damaged propeller from this.
All boats are different but I tend to refill to the fuel cap as it is the only time you know exactly how much fuel you have in the tank ( Full) its a bit messy but I have tried it by fuel gauges and by ear and I have been suprised how far out the latter two were.
