battery powered mast head tricolour

A lot of wires there Pete

I think I am going to buy these

one for the bow clipped onto the pulpit ahead of the genoa and the other at the back - same position

I generally do everything I can to avoid sailing or even moving at night

I doubt that I will do much night time sailing - although I did some on the Colne - but I grew up on the River.

I am always sailing in places that I do not know very well

Probably a sensible choice if you wont have the boat wired with a 12 volt system.
Pity there is not also one that you could use as a masthead/steaming light, then you'd be able to motor at night a well

Not really - two up the mainmast, one up the mizzen. Collars made them with a channel up the inside; they're made of two halves glued together so I assume they routed a slot in each half before putting them together.

I forgot to mention the small upward-facing LED I have to shed a glimmer onto the burgee for night sailing, but too dim to mistake for a nav light. No extra wires for that though, it's run off the bicolour supply.

I was answering Alahol's question rather than making a suggestion for your boat though. I think you're right to leave your rigs un-electrified, and if you're not using them much then those portables may well be the right answer.
