You buy two identical things at the same time, treat them exactly the same, no surprise if they react exactly the same.

Ordinarily, you might be right, but for two batteries to fail with a short circuit cell at the same time i'd say that was a bit less common, to say the least.

Not common, but not unknown, back in the 90's Sealine had a complete batch of batteries with a intermittent shorted cell fault.
