battery charging - mower

The question is .... does the mower work with that battery ?

I know the numbers are a bit iffy ... but OP never really gave much more info.
Thats' a good point. I assumed there was an issue with starting or something. Perhaps he decided to check voltages because he was bored. You never know. :)

PS. Should I be using 'they' instead of 'he' just in case I offend!!

I don't like the 14.5V battery reading .... but if its measured while charging - it could show this. But once stopped and minute later would show more sensible figure.

The 18.5V alternator ? Not sure but maybe as another says - that's no load output ?

I have a battery / alternator tester - but it puts a significant load on to give me a reading ... so that does not help with those numbers.

That should have read 'names' or 'makes' .... fat fingers and crappy keyboard.
Gathered that but what threw me was 'maes'
Without the comma, can mean grass or field or park in Welsh!!
Plus without looking properly I thought it was Seastoke who posted
Now He cant spell in any language
Plus He's from Stoke, so communication is always a little fraught!

14.5 just after the mower switched off
18.5 with the motor on

yes it does start with the battery recently charged up
if i leave it on charge for a long time = weeks, it does not start
that is a new charger, same with the old one
total mystery to me :(

have not measured the charging voltage of the mower in the past as i assumed - always bad - that this was not going to be an issue, mainly as it does not run for long, so how much damage can it do ......

so perhaps the 18.5 whilst running damages the battery ?

What do you get after its rested for a bit ? My mower batterys both read about 13+V full charged.

18.5 with the motor on

I checked mine and alternator voltage going to battery is ~15.5V ..... at high speed ... drops back to about 14.8V at mowing speed.

ok

Are you using smart charger or basic non auto charger ? typical mower battery is only about 18 - 20A/hr so should never need long on a charger, even a low rate 4A charger. Mine even when handyman forgets to check and I find them low - only take half day or so to charge up again at 4A setting.

Easy enough to remove alternator and take to auto electrics guy to check it out. That way you are sure.

Still sounds like battery. If fully charged it should read 12.7v a few hours after you take the charger off. How old is the battery?
