Battery charger in Moody 38 fitted in engine compartment makes obtrusive humming noise. Anyone know why? Is this a symptom of impending demise necessitating a new one or is there a simple remedy ? I should add that the charger does do its job if rather noisily!

Hum (at 50Hz) on mains powered rectifiers (like battery chargers) usually comes from the smoothing capacitor. If it gets hot as well, something may be amiss and you could try dabbing all the circuit board joints with a soldering iron (dry joints are the usual problem). If it was a design fault, you could try changing the capacitor for a bigger one.

If it'a fairly old then it may very well have a transformer in it. These are prone to hum especially when the laminate clamp eases off. It might well be worth taking the lid off and checking if it can be tightened up. Another thought is to rubber mount it so although it hums it doesn't transmit it to the rest of the boat.
Some of them also have a fan in (my Sterling does) and it may be that that's producing the noise.
