How do I compensate for the curve in the mast when riveting the mast steps?

If they are the stainless folding steps you will probably find that unless your mast is very curved where the steps go, they will pull into the curve of the mast when riviting them

Is it strictly nesessary to use monel or would one size larger ali do?

The right answer is to use monel. That said I used ali and the steps were fine for over 10 years.

Don't forget to insert the plastic washers between the step and the mast to minimise corrosion.

Didn't notice the curve when I fitted mine, but it was quite a deep mast, with fairly flat sides IIRC
