Barracuda 45, any one know this boat?

I agree Brian, no need for a thruster, and no room for the bits if you did want to fit one. Also agree with you about going astern.
Don't agree with you though on up wind, nor sailing them short handed (2). I tried to shadow a 42s7 upwind on a test sail - lost out hugely. Downwind, great stuff - needed 6 of us though for safety. Agree with you totally on the maint bit. Again a shame that BoT suffers from a total lack of it.
 
Sadler Barracuda 45

Hi everybody new to this post,
I am looking for information on the Barracuda 45 thinking of buying one, I have heard all the bad points on the build quality but I am still attracted to it.If the boat needs work I do not mind, I need someone that owns one to tell me what to look out for. The boat I am looking at was built in 1986 comm in 1988 so they tell me, is there a production number on these boats if so where is it. The keel is winched by hand, there is a volvo 55 hp, she is fiberglass not the cedar.
the boat I have is a Dehler 38 I am looking for something a bit bigger and I like the retractable keel and I think its a lovely looking boat.

If you don't get an answer here, there's a chap called Andy Middleton in the Poole area who worked at Sadler and has at least the Sadler 32 moulds, he might know. Or there's Mike Lucas down in Torquay as well, specialises in brokerage for Sadlers and is a purveyor of spare parts.

I should think Mike Lucas is most likely to know. If not the plug (Barracuda of Tarrant) and the moulds were built by Elephant Boatyard so Tom Richardson may know. Also David Harding of PBO fame was at Sadler at that time so he may have some ideas
 
Barracuda Moulds

In the mid nineties the moulds for the Barracuda were obtained by a guy called Paul Roper who was associated with a company called White Silk Yachts based if memory serves correctly at Martham in Norfok. The plan was to put the boat back into production and he quoted me various prices for various stages of work etc. He said he had been in discussion with Tony Castro to discuss updating the design with the latest technology.

He also stated that they had produced a hull from the mould to identify any problems but had not encontered any. He also said that the mould had been used to produce a new skeg for 'Moonboots' I do not know if Roy Hart can confirm this.

Anyway at some stage the plan changed and the idea was to ship the moulds to Malta to take advantage of lower labour costs. They were hauled to Tilbury docks but some problem prevented them being loaded. Everything then went belly up. As I understand, the moulds were impounded at Tilbury because of unpaid storage fees. The haulage contractor was not paid, Paul Roper seemed to disappear and from then on the trail goes cold.
 
You couldn't make it up. What a shame, an update of Barracuda would be fantastic, especially if it did not leak!

Anyone know what happened after that?
 
The Barracuda 45 in Howards way Bob Fishers old boat is up for sale in Brighton Marina . Yes she is wood and built using the cold mould method of construction .After Bob sold her she had a refit in Shamrock quay around the keel over looked by David Allen Williams (Enza Fame) which is a clever bit of kit that is raised manualy. Sailed and raced on it delivered it . Good boat just needs a clean up . Good for chartering as well.

I wonder if this is the same one that used to be sponsored by Navico, I watched her sailing down the Dart many years ago. She fell over halfway between Bayards Cove and Warfleet. I seem to remember the keel bulb just fell off. They were very lucky.

I have attached the photo used in the ad.

Navico is written on her aft quarter.

At present she is ashore and the keel bulb appears to be in place.

Baraccudas

They are 21/22 years old now so the care and maintenace they have recieved will outweigh any build quality which was poor. Have had mine since mid 90s. After looking around last year at new Southerlies etc decided to refurb living quarters of Ronhilda ( seating, sole floor, cockpit grating, linings, loos etc) as could not see any point in shelling out loads of lolly to replace what is still a sound boat that is great to sail.

I still maintain she is deal easy and safe to sail with just the wife, you just take it gently and reef down so no sailing like the avatour pic which is reserved for mates sailing trips

After the bulb fell off did she not sink as water would have to be up to the cockpit hatch.
