Some interesting points gents, and thanks for the links. Having received so many comments, I thought I would add my reasons for the question. Yes, I do sail, and can't remember barometric pressure being taught on the RYA courses, but my real interest here is that I have a flat close to the sea in Stonehaven, north east Scotland. In December 2012, along with other coastal settlements, it was badly damaged by flooding and since then I have been curious about the reasons behind the flood. Tides were high but not unusually so, on shore winds strong but, again, nothing unusual, and barometric pressure low. I have heard that the North Sea was well above its usual level owing to a long spell of strong westerlys, forcing the Atlantic through the Channel and round North Scotland, but have been unable to verify this. If we could better understand the circumstances which gave rise to the floods we could, perhaps, do better at predicting them in future - or so I hope.
Sorry if this is a bit long and non boaty but I thought you all deserved a reply!
