I was just idly browsing the Berthon site as the front page of YBW had 2 Clipper yachts for sale. £245 each I think, but pretty well used and the interior only fit for the purpose that they already had.

Spotted this though http://www.berthon.co.uk/yacht-sales-brokerage/used-yachts-for-sale/vessel/98399/

Seems like a bargain?? That would surely impress your mates wouldn't it? Or am I missing something. Seems like much better value than a 20 year old Hallberg Rassy for 150k?

Must be that the high costs of berthing etc depress that end of the market.

Anyway back to reality.............................................

It's a lot of boat for £299K certainly, but the running costs and ongoing maintenance workload would be huge. Most Oysters that size have full-time paid crew.

It would appear to be very well priced especially in view of the amount of work recently done. The issue with "old" boats of this type is not that the basic infrastructure isnt superb (well almost certainly with an Oyster) but even Oyster fit equipment which will be towards the end of its life by this stage (because there isnt anything else available). Some of the "stuff" on a yacht like this is very expensive - so for example if the hydaulics need a major overhaul that could be in excess of £10K, a set of sails maybe £20K and so the lists goes on. In addition as the previsous poster said just to keep the boat in a marina in the UK will be anywhere between £6K and £25K.

However for a liveaboard going places with lots of time at anchor assuming everything has been recently overhauled and really is in good condition it appears a bargain if you want something of that size. In my opinion its maybe a little large for a couple, but a couple with two or three older children or two couples - just perfect.

Also Holman & Pye design a real sea boat, for no momey

That's a lot of boat for not a lot of money. Partly shows just how depressed the 2nd hand market is now, also perhaps it is just a bit too big, I think not many people will really need a boat bigger than say 45'

Am I correct in thinking a new Oyster of comparable size wold be close to 2 million. If so it does seem a bargain and a huge price drop on new

Easily £2 million. But the people who can afford to run a boat that size can usually afford to buy a new(ish) one. At 20 years old, maintenance and refurbishment costs could be massive.

The OPs one also has new decks & they are expensive to replace

If you read the detailed spec of the boat on the OP's link, it says the decks were replaced in 2004, and that most of the other major overhaul work was done in 2009. If the original deck only lasted 13 years, the replacement will soon be ready for doing again!

Ex VAT so thats another £52k

I like the way it is already mine!!

It does seem its cheap because it is too big for mere mortals though. But wouldn't it be great to invite your mates down for the weekend??!!!!

Maybe if I can persuade the wife to sell the house.............................................

Great boat, no doubt, and the price is more than attractive.
What surprises me though, is that it looks like a deck saloon on the outside, but it appears to have just a conventional saloon which makes no use of the view the window must surely afford, or are the pictures misleading?
