Bare Boat charter - where

I remember many years ago reading of someone who rented a villa/apartment in Menorca with a sports boat on a berth included in the deal. Is anyone aware of something like this available?

Yes IIRC it used to be operated by the owner of the old Sealine dealer based at Swanwick (Quay Marine?) but I think he's long gone

You might try Quaysport and contact Peter. He operates a small fleet of Sealine hire boats at Cala Llonga near Mahon,Menorca. He's also likely to know of villa availability in the area overlooking the moorings or nearby,I would think. Also good for RYA training in the sun or just brushing up on your existing skills. Been there and done it and highly recommend it.

+1 on hurting like hell.. Got stung many times while surfing in South Africa.. Really nasty thing is the tails (the stingy bit) stretches it seems like forever so as you flap around after the initial sting it wraps more and more around your legs or arms or whatever making it a million times worse..

:) I got stung while windsurfing off Vetch's pier, Durban.

Hi Gary....... well, now your possess an ICC, how about having a word with a forumite called FJM, (I think)? He owns a "stinker" on the "med"!!.. if I recall its called Scratch, Patch, Swan vesta or similar!!... length in the region of 78ft ...its not all that old so most of the "stuff" SHOULD be in working order. im sure it has a crane that you might be able to scrounge to help your access to your steering ram!!!!!.... just thought I,d mention it.!!!!!... ................................... ................................. ...(runs for cover)

lols Mr D... snap quiz: the boat that sank in East Cowes a few days ago, was it:

1: Cahu
2: Oahu
3: Canu
4: Kahu

?

:)

There's certainly plenty of choice in Croatia but you might struggle to find someone doing weekend charters. Try yacht-base.com, we used them last year and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Depending on how you want to spend the rest of the holiday, Balearics might be a better bet (see comments above re beaches). Try Mike and Silja at sea-teach.com in Cala D'Or. We did a two day refresher course on a Targa 50 this year (want one!) and spent the rest of the week on nice (but narrow) sandy beaches.

thanks for the ideas guys, great choice to go for both in terms of destination and choice of boat. the option of hiring a RIB for a few days sounds appealing for our first boat hire experience

Some of our favourites in order of attractiveness.

Pacific NW - 3 charters over last 20 years, out of Anacortes, Bellingham and Vancouver. Great countries, grand scenery, interesting cruising, cheap fuel, wilderness or well serviced Marina facilities and friendly boaters. Only downside is floating logs or 'deadheads.' A good lookout underway is essential.

Stockholm archipelago - 2 charters - wonderful Nordic summers, challenging but non tidal navigation, history and pleasant small towns plus Stockholm itself.

New England - 1 charter - Pleasant, scenic, sometimes foggy, nice towns, friendly folk and lots of lobster pots!
