I got some bad news today. SWMBO must have a knee surgery in the near future which will rule out her climbing the vertical ladder to the command bridge of our Bayliner 2556. Started looking for a substitute and narrowed my choice to three pretty similar boats:

  • a 1983 Joda 7500 + Yanmar 125hp with 1129 hours on
  • a 1989 Windy + Yanmar 75hp, hours unknown
  • a 1993 Polar 7700 + Yanmar 85hp with 1993 hours on
I’m trying to foresee what would be the cons and pros (if any) having been forced to replace the 2556 with one of these. I bought the Bayliner primarily for the view from the top and now I must come down.:(

Any input would be of great help. Thanks.

The command bridge sounds like a place to get some peace and quiet

Not sure what your boating is, but Nimbus, Corvette and Aquastar, Turbo 36 all offer roomy and fairly level boating. The raised aft deck or fly bridges are stair accessed, rather than ladder.

Don't panic, I honestly saw a flybridge boat with a Stannah lift in Brixham

We never use the upper helm because the dog can’t get up there. Learn to helm from below! And invest the money you would have lost on the sale, into rehabilitation. She’ll be climbing in no time???

Day/weekend/one week cruises in Halkidiki Greece. 20-25000€ is my financial limit. Ideally, a 25-26 cabin cruiser with a fairly large aft deck and a raised steering position, capable of 15 to 20 knots cruising without strain would suit me best.

:)Seriously, I haven't discarded this option. Not yet. Unless I am lucky come across an absolutely ready to sail replacement.

Check that the Windy and the Polar can reach your target speed in case they are underpowered

So far my favorite is the Joda 7500. Anyone with knowledge/experience of this hull and engine?

BTW, a friend of mine is selling his Quicksilver 640 Weekend with a practically new Merc 115hp. Is this boat any good?

The Quicksilvers are incredibly popular here. I don’t think you can go wrong with one (as long as the Mercury is in good shape) but it’s certainly not an upgrade from your Bayliner

Decided to keep the boat. Hope my wife will be able to climb after the surgery. Thanks for your advice and support.

What kind of surgery? Totally knee replacement? Arthroscopic meniscus surgery,... After some surgeries the Range of motion of the knee should be as good as before, even better...
If you use the knee of SWMBO to get a new boat, forget my question;)

Depending on her age / mobility / general health, it shouldn’t be a huge issue.

I had an arthroscopy in 2018 including meniscus repair, and I had a week at home, then week two skippered down to Weymouth and happily rafted on the quay climbing over the inner boats. I’m not saying it was perfect at week two, but more than capable of boating. And I would think a short ladder to fly bridge will be fine after a few weeks.

I had some uncommon and unusual complications and ended up having to have a knee replacement 7 months later, spring 2019, and I was back skippering that summer no problem. We have steps rather than ladder to fly bridge, but I’m in and out of engine room etc.

Alas yet more complications - unlucky is my middle name - and this last week I learned I need a third surgery, another arthroscopy.

However... I was, and seemingly remain, unlucky. The chances are she will recovery well. A few weeks TLC and I‘m sure she will be back to boating just fine; keep your aspirations realistic for rest of season.

If SWMBO wants a call with someone who has been through this, please PM me.

I've got it wrong, and rammed down my throat too by SWMBO (72 but very much alive and kicking) . It's a total knee replacement. She nearly followed your route when a friend of hers went for an arthroscopy instead of the total replacement. BIG MISTAKE. Arthroscopy proved to be a half measure and six months later she was back to hospital for the full Monty
