Back to the UK for a winter refit

Sorry for relative silence. Project is still progressing well. There was finally a break in the weather at the weekend and so I was able to template the teak for the bathing platform:

I then delivered the template up to Wattsons on Tuesday, and also agreed some final details for the new cockpit table - so this is all now underway finally.

Minor works continue on the boat in Brighton
- modifications to bow roller for new anchor
- improvement to generator raw water connections
- new helm seat base
- new locking mechanism for folding backrest in cockpit
- extension to tender launch frame
- replacement of all interior light fittings
- completion of electronics installation

This last task has been eating a lot of time lately, nearly finished - but one casualty was a ceiling panel in the mid cabin (the end one over the head end of the beds, with the two light fittings). Just figuring out how to refix this at the moment.

3M dual lock squares?

Yep, dual lock will feature in the solution somewhere, but the panel is curved ply, so part of it is horizontal ceiling panel, and part of it runs up the vertical face of the stbd window reveal. My current plan is to make a timber fitting that will allow the panel to slide horizontally into place, and then hold it on the vertical surface with dual lock I think.

Jimmy, what did you replace the old light fittings with?

Jfm very generously donated some very lovely square Cantalupi led fittings - so more light for less amps. Most of the fittings are a straight swap; two require new holes to be cut, and for one tricky fitting I had to do a bit of surgery and install the guts of one of the new fittings into the trim of one of the old ones.

I seem to recall trying silicone. That did not work so in the end I used 2 small screws I think.

God how I hate dual lock. Getting it to mate together I always find near impossible. A decent clout can sometimes work but if it doesn't ( the panels to the side of the master bed in the T40 spring to mind) nothing will!

Dual lock can be difficult to mate the two parts. I have overcome this by mating the squares before fitting. I then apply glue eg araldite rapid glue ( not relying on the existing "sticky " that is on the pads ) to both surfaces. This ensures that the squares are ready mated when I position the lining. It seems to work.

Not sure about the finish on the platform. I think I would have gone for teak with conventional caulking rather than the Tracey Emin approach.

There's no 'before' pics, sorry, and the lights are all now installed (did the last one this afternoon). Old fittings were Cantalupi Dallas, and new ones are (I think) Cantalupi Desert.

This is the Sterling/Carbon silvertex, with carbon fibre inserts.

I wanted the helm seat to be a bit higher so we fabricated a 100mm base out of 6mm aluminium channel; I haven't decided how to finish this yet (prob etch prime and spray, but was also wondering about trimming it with some of the fabric offcuts).

There's a handle under the seat base for operating the fore-aft slider, and it always used to bug me that this would dig in the back of my leg - so we cut this off and made it shorter. These are admittedly nerdy details that'll probably only make any sense at all to other T40 owners, sorry

You are going to have one of the (if not the) nicest T40's ever! Just remember all this effort (and financial pain) will be worth it when Vega is anchored in Villefranche. :encouragement:

Nice detailing Jimmy, the seat looks great. Could you use some of the material to make a valance to cover the base?

Finished this today as well - made some tongue fittings on the horizontal section of the panel that slide into the existing battens in the ceiling structure, and then just a couple of hidden blocks for the vertical piece (above that false mid cabin ceiling above the stbd porthole). No dual-lock required!

J. in the greatest scheme of expenditure, I'd replace all rollers (unless they are 50quid a piece, which I hope they aren't!) or unless you can treat the rest somehow to restore their colour!
You may argue the above comment is OCD related, but then so is the detailing on the cabin ceiling in you next post that only ants will ever be able to see again

Funnily enough I did think that too (they are only about £3 each). As the to-do list currently only has 44 things left on it, I might yet do this...
