Back to the UK for a winter refit

Nice one Jimmy.

Have you had to modify the tender deployment rollers as well?

I will have to, but haven't yet. That's being done in Brighton next week; there was no point doing anything about it until the platform was completely finished - it's just easier for the fabricator to extend the rollers to the actual fittings, rather try and do it off a drawing.

So will you be starting a line of discussion on which exact directors chairs to buy for the swim platform Jimmy? You need to get them asap so that whoever is doing the cockpit upholstery can reupholster them to match. I quite like Valdenassi's chairs meself... http://www.valdenassi.com/inglese/prodotti/mobili_uk/round_uk.htm

As is ever thus, jfm, you've come up with something that I hadn't even thought about. Hmm.

For a boat geek though, I've had a fab day today: a 500m round trip of suppliers, starting with Tockfield in Alfreton, Derbyshire. Tockfield were the OE cockpit upholstery supplier for the Targa 40 (and various other Fairline models), and still have the CNC plans for the upholstery (I looked at the cutting lay-up today, in fact). For that reason, I've used Tockfield a couple of times before and they were my first choice for the cockpit reupholstery. Today was collection day, and pleasingly it all looks loads better in the flesh than I was expecting from the photos. We did have a minor comms hiccup about piping colour, but Tockfield just got on and sorted it out. Thanks in particular are due to Kevin - top chap.

Anyway - to your point, I do have some silvertex offcuts, but I'm not sure that that would be the best fabric for chair upholstery. Given how hard I found it to choose the cockpit upholstery in the first place, I might have to park this one for a bit until I find a bit more creative inspiration.

...

Then, after a fun hour at Tockfield first thing this morning, next stop was Wattsons near Kettering. Wattsons supplies all the major UK boatbuilders with teak and tables, but despite all these big clients, the sales director still gave me an hour of his time today to discuss design options for the new cockpit table. I also had a bit of a factory tour, which was fascinating. Anyway, table design is agreed, they are going to draw it up for final approval next week and hopefully it'll be here in about three weeks time. I haven't had time yet to template the bathing platform teak, I'm hoping to get that done this weekend.

Jfm, you'll be pleased to know you have your own folder in their cad design archive!

Final stop, back in Brighton, was SSL in Brighton Marina to organise some final fabrication work on the boat next week - as well as the tender rollers mentioned by Wakeup, there is a change to one of the seating frames in the cockpit, and a change to the helm seat adjuster mechanism. Always a pleasure to see the guys at SSL.

Jimmy,

Would SSL in Brighton be able to fabricate a new tender roller system for my T43? Currently the dinghy doesn't roll on the rollers and the stern falls in between the rollers and has to be lifted onto the next one if you get what I mean.

Love the new platform, I had a good nose round it last week when you weren't there, great workmanship all round.

I'm not familiar with the T43 tender launch; on the T40 there is a roller set on a frame which slots into fittings on the trailing edge of the garage floor, and the also on the trailing edge of the bathing platform. All I'm doing is extending the frame, and adding rollers if needed. If the T43 system is similar then I imagine they could adjust it for you. Bob the fabricator at SSL is excellent, he's done loads of stuff for me, I'm sure if you took your requirements along to him then he'd be able to help.

Haha! I should have - we have exchanged plenty of drawings for stuff they've made for me, and pretty much all the OEM stuff they supply to Fairline for my boats has been modded on both my last 2 boats :-) They're a good firm to work with and the product is top top quality

You've had a busy day, sheesh!

Going back to those chairs, I was probably exaggerating the problem. What you can do is order from Valdenassi (near San Remo) when you're in France. You can then mail one set of the fabric parts (seat+ backrest - they locate with boltrope so just slide out ) to Tockfield to copy them in Silvertex including your "squares" quilting pattern. Job done. For the important purposes of getting a picture onto this thread of you sitting on bathing platform (that sitting being the whole point of the swim platform project, iirc) I can lend you my 2 valdenassi chairs, which have light silver upholstery so will match :D

Ref post #820, which month? April or May?

OK I'll get in touch and see what they can do to help. Good to have a recommended source.

Have you tried Fusion Welding on Ampress Park? Roger is the main man, and they will be able to do it for sure, and prices are OK. They're usually pretty busy though, so it may not be straight away.

So, it's now 174 days since I started this project. Today, this happened, hurrah:

Hi Jimmy,
I've not been around much last few weeks due to invalid and also fell behind with the thread. The riser story ended well. I reckon if you took a couple more down there and a few machine guns those guys could build a template for a Spitfire! ;)
All looking really fine now, I be you're getting a little excited by now and looking forward to sitting out back on the new swim deck.

Search lights a mystery for us all as they are usually just played with to check still working and to wind-up neighbours/friends at night. The strange thing is that the remote operated versions as usually found on most Fairlines are next to useless when you actually need them as they move too slowly when you need to look forward and then immediately aft.

On Houston, I removed the naff one and replaced it with a 12 volt deck socket on the Fly's dash and into which I plug a hand held halogen search / spot lamp, that's slips into a female mounting. It is much brighter and smaller, about 125 mm diameter and also easily removable for safe stowing and lamp replacement. The Helfos remote types have quite an involved loom which is prone to failiure of one axis through lack of use, meaning that it'll work fine until you actually need it.:ambivalence:

Just an idea if you haven't already fixed the existing one.

Great to see how things have developed, amazing that you have found the time. Well done and great thread.

Yes, used those guys before. Should've thought of them!! I'll give them a call, thanks for the reminder Nick.

Wow that is a work of art! Their number is going into my address book right away! Glad you are afloat again now. Just need some decent weather to get the sea trials done.

Well, it wasn't ideal, but I ran mine for 50nm from Bursledon round to Brighton marina this afternoon. All fine - t's and p's all rock solid. Sea state not good enough for a wot test though - maybe later this week. Final stages of electronics installation will be easier to complete now the boat is much closer to home.

Good job Jimmy. Must have been a chilly trip though?

Not for us but you know how soft the Med boys get, they are used to warm sun and blue water. ;)

Well done Jimmy, must have felt like a prison break.

Don't forget the pics to end the refit, wouldn't want to see you get keel hauled.:encouragement:
