Jimmy are you going to leave the main stuff in Volvo green? Howsabout white castings, with black on some components eg rocker cover and starter motor, then silvery bits here and there like jubilee clips obviously?

Perhaps an awful conflict between OCD-OEM DNA on the one hand, and OCD-perfection DNA on the other

Yep, volvo green. Bracketry etc will be black (it is hidden). Engine covers are already black and will stay that way. All jubilee clips are changing to stainless (they are plated mild, OE) and corroded bolts and machine screws will be changed for A4 self colour.

Jimmy after seeing those pics I don't blame you for wanting to have the engines tidied up, my 2003's don't look that bad. That said, it's just surface corrosion as you say, so nothing to panic about. However, a tidy engine bay is a happy engine bay

We replaced all the jubilee clips with stainless when we did ours Jimmy.....couldn't believe that VP went for the cheaper option!

Pretty much all cars have a "Beauty Cover", created by the underhood styling team (I kid you not). Last thing us boaters need is another barrier over the engine that we have to move for the regular checks and maintenance. However, how many of us spend the same time on our everyday cars? . Mine goes to the Stealer when the warning light requests, at about 20,000 miles.

Yea..looks like the self heating hot tub in the engine bay had consequences...

I am not surprised but disappointed for you as to how much corrision there is, I have seen others but yours is the first I have seen stripped so back so well. Other victims to the self sinking Volvo seawater filters have usually tried to spray a bit of Volvo green to mask it! Not usually with much much success!! Looking promising though.

Well, today was test-fit day for the main section of the bathing platform. After a bit of a grim start to the day weather-wise, the sun came out, and the bathing platform arrived. I imagine the two events are related.

Offered up, but not fixed:

Although we've only increased it by 495mm, it is noticeably larger than the original:

So the main section is in good shape; I need to get the supporting struts fabricated, and there's a little bit of tweakery required, but the main work is done. Next thing to think about are the pods. This is the port pod:

What was it that the Spice Girls nearly said? Oh yes - one becomes two. Again.

And with the two parts of the pod propped in place, you can see what we're trying to do here:

Next step is to fill in the gap. There's a bunch of ways of doing this, as discussed at some length above, and Paul the GRP man has a plan. More news on this in a week or so.

platform looks massive compared to the old one, good decision.
Curious on the pods, pic is level and doesn't help figure out the deviations (I guess there is some!)
If your grp man managed the platform puzzle so well, I bet he'll do the pods easily.

Agreed 100%.
In hindsight, considering that the rail over the hull/superstructure joint doesn't go round the stern corner (as I would have thought when I suggested to get rid of the pods altogether), going for the pods extension was the best choice for good.
I'm sure the finished job will be stunning! :encouragement:

From an OCD perspective, it's a no brainer, they've got to be green.

Where there's an OCD contradiction is whether you paint the hoses, jubilee clips, etc green, which would be truly OEM but has always felt like a bit of a bodge to me (unless there's some practical reason for doing this). Alternatively replace the hoses clips after the block has been painted so that they are in their original virgin colours.

To be honest I'd like to see Jimmy stripping the blocks completely then sandblasting them before re-painting. But that's probably not a realistic option. Incidentally Jimmy, how are you going to get the rust off the blocks - wire brush?

Blocks and principal anciliaries (turbos, coolers, starters etc) - green. Stainless clips and fixings - self colour. Corroded bracketry - black. Cast ally ECU and engine covers - black. Hose - self colour (I completely agree that painting hoses seems wrong).

Shotblasting the blocks is not going to happen - the engines would need to be completely stripped down for that, and there's just no need to do that. So, it's a bit of time spent with a dremel with a wire brush. Hoping to make a start later this week.

Incidentally, I just picked up the engine mounts from the shot blasters; they've come up extremely well. Just need to pick a colour for them: white, green, black, silver, gold... it's worse than having to pick a blimmin fabric for the cockpit!

I'd always assumed that VP did this for warranty reasons so any mods or changes to the engine or lack of service could be clearly seen if paint seal broken.

I just assumed they sprayed the blocks after they'd put all the ancillaries, hoses, clips on etc. No doubt some clever soul will be along soon to put us right!
