A couple of years back there were two threads where someone had extended a T40 swim platform. One of them by just a foot or so and the other had really made it much larger, enough to put a table and chairs on it. I always thought it needed about a foot or so for easy access on pontoons but I suppose it's less important if you're mooring stern to in the med.
How much are planning to go for?

I guess the electronics upgrade is partially due to the recent break in and theft. I would expect one of the 'locals' to suggest a touch screen model but I was recommended to avoid this on the T40 as it's possible to turn the daylight mode off accidentally if you're out in some chop and it's then a pain to reset what you can't see.:ambivalence:

I've seen pics of two T40's with extended platforms, one was Ace who used to post here (but hasn't been seen for a long time, and hasn't replied to a recent PM) and the other was on a T40 for sale in Portugal. Ace's was the really big extension - I don't want to put that much on the boat, for me 500mm will be enough. I want to be able to step out of the way of the garage as I open it, and to have enough room to sit on a chair on the platform.

And yes, the electronics was started off by the theft of the radar - but it wasn't a hard decision to take, tbh. Order being finalised at the moment and hopefully will be placed next week.

Whilst engines are out is a good time to inspect the fuel tanks for corrosion, A friend had one of his replaced a couple of years ago big job.
Even worth considering lifting tanks to check bottom panels

Wow Jimmy, lifting the engines seems a bit drastic if there's nothing major wrong with them. What are you actually having done? Just a silly thought but how about taking the opportunity to remap the engines for more power/torque or would you be worried about the drives?

The problem is that you can't really get all around the engines in the T40, because it is after all a small boat. The stbd engine in particular has no access at all to the outboard side. I could see that there were corrosion issues and I want to try and resolve these. Probably we'll end up replacing or reconditioning the ancilliaries, particularly the coolers - they are looking leaky. Hoping to get back along to the yard this afternoon to have a proper look.

How about a dash board mod? I love the T40, the only small detail (and it is small) is the set of dials in the little half moon binnacle immediately behind the steering wheel date the appearance of the boat imho, the main dash less so, but they are design paired that much I do appreciate. I would look to move the little one forward somewhere, perhaps where the map cover is, and then square off the dash. Or reconfigure the main dash to accommodate all the dials in view. As the dashes are in different colour anyway you could have some fun re configuring the layout and use a more modern colour and layout without having to worrying about the overall integration/matching with the rest of the structure.

As I say it is a small point but I would at least change the colour perhaps with a carbon fibre wrap for both the small dial dash and the big dash forward of the companion way. Or go for the same hue that JFM used on Match Z. Looks like you've got plenty to do btw anyway. It will be great once finished.

Of course your £70k 'savings' on buying a replacement boat will be even better used, as you'll spend less than £20k on logistics, cosmetics, electronics and maintenance, thus saving £50k, which sounds like an opening for a weekend 911 to me.

Ah yes, Man Maths, one of my favourite pastimes and which can be used to justify a purchase of any boat/car/motorbike and amazingly it can also be used to demonstrate the folly of buying any new kitchen/conservatory/carpets. If you had said you needed a project I could have suggested a boat already in the UK which would appreciate some TLC, though I think the only way the engines are coming out of a V48 is through the bottom.

Did you do the mental gymnastics I did? The one where you go: if I sell the boat it will cost £10k+ in fees and it isn't the best time to sell, so maybe lose out on another £10k to get a quick buyer. Then I need to buy a new boat, but it will depreciate more compared with the dep. on the current boat, so costing me an extra £25k per year, over a couple of years that's another £50k. Total extra cost of changing the boat for another one that does nothing more would be £70k. If instead I spend £60k on a second boat, then I save £10k, which will pay for the new boat's berthing for 2 years. Heck, a second boat is cost neutral!

Excellent man maths! The next boat for me would be a V53 - but even a very early one is still twice the money of the T40, plus the cost to trade out of the berth and into a bigger one. So although the money I'm planning to spend on the T40 will add no value at all to the boat, it's still a *lot* cheaper than upgrading.

Pulling the fuel tanks would be extremely tricky, and in the absence of evidence suggesting there's a problem, are not on my list for this winter.

SWMBO has an equivalent, Sales Maths, which she used to good effect yesterday at Bicester Village. It seems I saved a fortune by her buying boots costing mega-bucks as they were half price.

No major surgery to the dash anticipated, although a bit of work is required to close up the opening for the existing C120 Classic to make it suitable for the incoming E125. I have thought about carbon wrapping all the navy blue dash panels, which would also solve the prob of colour matching that repair. I would just add that the curved dash binnacle does not offend me

Yep, definitely, as above - too heavy, and not enough room on the transom (remember I am on drives).

great thread JTB, been needing a new one of these. Great to pour some love on your boat once in a while and you are going the whole hog. If the boats right for you why change, the fibreglass ain't ever going anywhere its just what's in it that needs maintaining. Keep the pics coming. :encouragement:

Looking forward to seeing the end results. It must feel quite liberating to have the boat on your doorstep for the winter and the engines out the way so you can get at all the things you can't normally access.
