back in Italy

So far so good , free mooring in Le. Castella and free water, next stop Siracusa and free anchorage and a great market .

In all I had 13 years in Greece on both sides and I agree most of the time there nothing to pay , but every time we brought some thing it felt as if we was being ripped off . Off couse we will return to Greece the islands are lovely and the bays great , but as we all know well the once who have been sailing Greece a while , it
changing more and more town wall are being charged a fee , port police are getting tougher and. The seas and beaches are getting dirty bottles and plastic bags , which bring me to another point , when we shop if we don't need a plastic bag don't take it .

We ready for some where defferent for a while so it Italy , Sardinia and Corsica for this sessions , and with info from friends and people from the forum we hoping to find lots of free anchorages .

personally would never swap Greece for Italy.
the warmer weather is of course entirely coincidental and the food is good until you realise EVERY restaurant has Italian food and every shop sells the same pasta products.
And when it comes to being ripped off you are in a country where it has become a national art form.

Bluegrass , you maybe right about Italy being a country that rip people off , but the Greek have a way of doing it that gets goat , we spend a winter in Sicily and if cost no more then our winter in Messilonghi , as if happen come to think of it , it cost a lot less , for a start the marina fees was a lot cheaper , the food also cheaper and there was a lot of it , and not once did we buy any thing and felt ripped off ,

Guys I will report back on this in a few months time maybe by then I be eating my words ,

PS

Any thing cheaper then Greece , Internet , Greece 40 euros for 5gb for a month , Italy 5gb 20 euros a month .

That's our intentions for next year so it will be interesting to follow your progress.

You're missing the point here guys.

Traveling from country to country is about enjoying the contrast. Enjoy the best each offers; avoid experiences you don't like.

Wouldn't it be boring if every country was the same?

I am with you 100% Jim . That's why we became live aboard , to see places , not just to sit about in one country from one year to the next .

Lt 09.45 wind NW 5 , just about to cast our lines and head for Syracuse 135 miles .

I live at Pisa, will be happy to give a few words on the local info on moorings, restaraunts repairs etc. As far as being ripped off is concerned...........your not a local ! My mooring is cheaper than anything i ve seen in the UK !! and its located in one of the best cruising grounds in the world. My advice for Italy is get to know an Italian then go moorings shopping. A perfect example was a couple days ago i need flat calm waters to carry out a few jobs, need to lay in a marina for a week, the guy wanted 20 euro a DAY ! time to pull out the secret weapon....SWMBO !! she's Italian. She went in the office, 20 euro for the bloody week ! sorry he said to me, didnt realise your where an Italian family ! thought you where all english !:p

Corsica and Sardinia are stunningly beautiful........enjoy !

So do Italians think it acceptable to rip people off as long as they are not fellow Italians?
says it all really.

Pretty much yeah. they seem to have different prices depending on which flag your boat is flying.

Another example is the for a lift out, the most expensive they charge is the germans and dutch, god help you if your german, 300 euro ! 200 for brits and 120 for Italians !

If in Siracusa you should visit Don Camillo - together with Il Faro in Cadiz - it's one of the great ristorante in Europe.
le Castella has two very good ristorante, try L'Anibale.

However, I'm always wary of sweeping statements, providing you shun the tourist traps you can eat well in any country in Europe (even Croatia).
I'd second Vyv's comment that you'll pay more in Italy than in Greece and be hard-pressed to find 10% of the anchorages of Greece in Italy.
The quality of fresh produce in the markets tends to be higher in Greece, even if the cuisine can be mediocre.

Apology for the moan on an Sunday morning

Hi Charles

Your comments are noticed thanks but. I totally have to disagree with you regards markets in Greece and Italy , And food , I have sailed Greece and Med waters on and off for 14 years plus , and when I say sailed I don't mean sitting in Nidri from weeks on end or on the quay at Lafkas , not that there is any thing wrong with that if that is what you want to do , there very few Greece islands I haven't seen , so I would Say I have a good idea what Greece is all about , now don't get me wrong , we love the Greek islands and we will be back , but the food is **** unless you like chop and chips , warmed up mousaka or Greek salad which consisted of a blow of tomatoes and onions the only time I have had good food in Greece is in mid winter , last time we went out for a meal in Greece was in Messilonghi in march with a group of 12 and it was suppose to be fish and chip night cos this guy was well known for it , very simple food , you may know who I mean , everyone had to sent there meal back it was allful .

Now As for markets and the freshness of food in them , Italy beats Greece hands down , the market in Siracusa is a fine example of what Italian markets are like ,yes it is more expensive then Greece but Greece isn't that cheap any more thanks to the charters company , have you been in any of the marina lately ? And I not talking about that dump in Messilonghi which they call a marina , I would describe it more of and concentration camp which you have to pay to go onto . Even the town wall at Mortus now there are charging 20 Euros to use .
As far as anchorages goes your right there are more in Greece , the different is the once in Italy won't be over crowed with charter boats and Italians as they will all be anchored Greece .

Please don't get me wrong Greece is a great place with lovely Islands but there lots of other lovely places in the Med , some cruises in Greece have forgotten that under your main sail cover there a sail , get it up and sail off for a while and see other places .

When we left it was 1.42 .

We find out the cost in Sicily when we go to fill in a few days time .

Roadside price for diesel is euro 1.75 fuel berth prices are 10c per litre more. In Carloforte (south west Sardinia) there's no fuel berth but a petrol station just across the road from one of the marinas, where we fuelled up before crossing to Vulcano.
Generally, prices here are about 10 - 15 % more than Spain, apart from marina prices which are silly. Looking forward to getting back to Greece. Thanks for the tip about Mourtos. Will not bother going there.
