I've finally decided that putting grease into the cups and seeing it disappear at fast rate is in need of solution. I'm contemplating taking the top gland apart.. Now I believe that it may be with a packing ? but remember someone reckoning they solved similar with an O ring. At far cheaper than Blakes service kit costs !

Before anyone even 'dares' to say - replace it - I have to say that it works excellently and I have no reason to think it will not continue for another 30+ yrs as already !!

So who's sorted out Baby Blakes top pump glands ? Any tips / info before I start ?

[/ QUOTE ] Nobody will dare do that, least of all with one of those trouble free Lavacs. Just a pity you dont already have one.

Baby Blakes now have an improved pump top gland. Would not dare suggest checking that out either.

which pump are we talking about the sea water in one or the pooh out one.

I have fixed both, admittedly with a service kit as I replaced most all other parts at the time as they had not been done for 15 plus years.

Stupidly didn't do the stop cock at the same time which now needs a bit of attention.

(why would you ever replace them? Appart from the cost of the service kit they are great!)
 
Vic .. the BB you picture here is the LATER one !! Yep - mines older than that ... mine has the pumps in line at side ... water in pump in front of poo out.

There's nothing wrong with the bog - just the glands weep on both pumps. can be stopped by turning greaser a turn - but soon starts again - so seals are def. in need of replacement.

As to Lavac - I have trouble understanding why people like them .. sorry but I'd buy a Jabsco or the Compass copy before a Lavac. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
I have the later one with o rings rather than stuffing, tried new rings from expensice spares kit but it didn´t work so now i use ptfe stuffing from ASAP supplies. It´s greasy already and works well though still needs replacing maybe once or twice a year on a liveaboard. I´ll get a couple of rings in there then maybe a month later another ring when the first stuff beds down. Great loos, wouldn´t consider changing it.

Don't know whether Vic has, but I have, as well as two joker valves! It's dreadful, all this and my Lavac's only been in the boat for 25 years during which we cruised full time for eight years! Hopeless design. I mean, we've only done around 50K miles we've owned the boat and had to tolerate all these repairs! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'll bet we wouldn't have had all this trouble with a Jabsco! I mean seriously, a Jabsco!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I used to have a Baby Blake on my Hustler 30 many years ago, but even though I bought and fitted parts from the extraordinarily expensive service kit and it did work reasonably well, the two problems which sealed its fate, were the fact that you could (then) only use that hard, shiney paper, and the almost insurmountable difficulty in being able to explain to work the darned thing to visitors.

In the end, out it came and sat on a shelf in my garage for around 20 years before I gave it to a chap on the Classic Boat forum here.

We fitted a Lavac to that boat (what blissful simplicity) and our present boat came with one already fitted. I don't know how many BB's are sold each year, but I really do think the original claim of being built to last longer than any other, is now seriously challenged by Lavac.

Whats hard about using a BB ? One pumps in, other pumps out.
I have people on my boat who have never seen a boat before - simple demo and no prob.

The big killer for BB now is the ridiculous price of one now ! It costs more than many small boats !!

But you have to give it credit - its' the longest run production line boat bog of all ... apart from a Thunderbox of course !

Mine came fitted to the boat when I bought it. In over 10yrs ownership - it's never blocked, always performed it's duty.

Today I set to with the glands ... and sorted without even need to replace anything .... slacked gland nuts and then tightened pump top nuts before tightening gland nuts back again. This gave a little extra on the gland nut. Probably not correct way to sort - but it works.
