Looking at the Azi 46 and I can't quite work out the cabin options. I know there were two and three cabin boats, with the third cabin being bunks on the port side.

What is confusing me is the layout of the mid cabin double to starboard. Most boats I have found have this as an offset double - the bed is at 45 degrees to the cabin. See below:

However I have found a couple of boats with photos that show the mid berth as a bigger across beam set up which is a convertible twin set up with an infill to make the double. See below:

The second option suits me as it gives greater flexibility for guests etc but it difficult to know for sure as brokers are basically **** at knowing what they are selling.

Any Azi experts out there know if this was a chane in layout on a specific yer or if it was a customer specified option.

Thanks

I don't know but:
1. Deleted User had one so hopefully he will chip in
2. There is I think one about to arrive at essexboatyards so you can take a look
3. Even if the boat you want has the double, it is likely only carpentry work so you could convert to twins or the single bed with infill panel

Hi John,

I had a chat with mike in Croatia last week, but not about this specific question.
I noticed EBY had one coming in but unfortunately it's a 2 cabin boat (no bunk cabin) which isn't suitable - I really need/want the third cabin.
Interesting what you say about modding the boat. I assumed it would be GRP moulding glasses to the hull but I guess I can look. Going to see one later in the week on the south coast which has the preferred option B so that will give an idea how it works, but as you can imagine the vast majority are for sale in the med and its difficult to actually get out of brokers which boat has what. There answer to just about any question is 'yes yes yes yes of course'

The picture on top is the layout which Azimut started using from around 1999....

The layout below was the first introduced in 1996 from hull one and ahead.
Also Azimuts 46 from 1996 till 1997/8 had no crew cabin option.

In my experience is much harder to find the layout that features the large midships cabin with two single berths.
Infact I have never came across one with this layout, and I visited over a dozen 46s from various ages.

In the two drawings of the lower deck, the mid-cabin looks to have the same footprint which is perhaps why jfm has suggested that it might just be a case of some carpentry work to switch from the double to twin beds in that cabin.

Nothing wrong at all. It might have been possible that Azimut still offered this layout before actually removing it.

Have an 04 brochure picked at the Genoa boat show and that layout was not shown in it. It still might have been a possible option though for the main cabin.

I have also the 1998 brochure which showed that layout.

Jez, I've never seen an AZ46 with the lower layout and I looked at a few but late on in the model span, they introduced the AZ46 Evolution which might feature that layout although I'm really not sure. I'm not sure what difference it makes as either way that cabin is not en suite to the heads next door. We toyed with the idea of using that cabin ourselves as the master cabin but the lack of en suite and the big walk-in wardrobe in the master bow cabin persuaded us otherwise. Also, just my personal opinion, but I wouldn't buy one with a crew cabin as it eats up too much space in the engine bay. As you probably realise, there is no separate lazarette on the AZ46 (its an Italian thing) so you have to store your stuff in the engine bay and a crew cabin just eats up the spare space

Thanks mike.

Interesting re: the heads door as on both plans it's shows dual access to that head.

Going to see one on Friday so will answer a few questions. Good news is Andrea has said she liked the idea of a med mobo - 'but not as big as mike's - I think we should stick to under 50ft'. That's a restriction I can live with :)

I'm 100% certain (from boat show memories etc) that some were built with a door twixt starboard cabin and starboard heads, as shown in the layout pics, thus creating a boat with 2 ensuite cabins. Some must have been built without the door as Deleted User owned one so he cannot be wrong, but for sure some were built with the door.

Yup I saw that but on our boat there wasn't the en suite access. Ours was a 1999 boat and therefore one of the earlier models. AFAIK, the AZ46 had at least a 10yr model life so it would be surprising if Azimut didn't make changes over that period or it's possible that it was a cost option on the earlier models.
Btw I don't know whether you know but some AZ46s suffered from minor osmotic blistering. Mine had some around the lower edge of the transom which were picked up my buyer's surveyor when I sold the boat. Even though the hull was out of warranty, Azimut picked up the repair bill in my case but, of course, I doubt whether they'd do that now on earlier models. Apparently it's more common in Med based boats that spend all year in the water with only a quick lift for antifouling

Sorry WL I bought that AZ46 in the Hamble that you were looking at and it has the twin bunk layout and also a door from the mid-cabin to the 2nd head in a 'Jack & Jill' arrangement. As you know it has osmosis that is currently being sorted.

Another one. Where is the osmosis on this one?

All over, the underside is being peeled as we speak. It is heaviest on the spray rails and sides, but in fairness it is not un-common so I am led to believe. EBY has a 2 cabin version and that has it also.

The rest of the boat is in pretty good order, needs the upholstery sorting, but it made it back from the Hamble to Essex at 2200 rpm, sweet as a nut.

Yeah its not uncommon on AZ46's. My blistering was minor in comparison and it was fixed foc by Azimut, despite being out of the hull warranty period, because I think they knew the AZ46 had problems. Once you get this sorted I'm sure she'll be a good boat. Has it got the Cat3208TA engines?

My fibreglass man says that it will be better than new with 5 coats (I think) of Epoxy Resin on her. Yes, she has 3208's (435hp), they purr beautifully (excuse the pun). She is a beauty for sure and I am very happy with her. She will be cruising the east coast in 2014 and hopefully another trip to the channel islands (I did a trip this year in my old boat).

The 3208s are excellent engines but did you get them checked out by a Cat technician?

Yep, only thing he found was a weeping water pump, that is now rebuilt. Sound engines even though they have 1500 hrs on them.
