Awesome Sail

Oh dear, it's the old up/down the Wallet problem again. I'm a "down = from London" old-fashioned type myself, so I get easily confused.

Too damned cold to go sailing - didn't even finish the crossword.

There is when it's howling out there and you're already taking on more water than usual /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

We never take on water - possibly Duvel /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We've plenty of good clothes, mostly Mustos, and a good sprayshield (HR) but age and wimpitude are getting the better of me, as well as worsening Raynaud's, which means I spend half the time in the heads trying to get sensation back into my fingers by soaking them in warm water. We looked out at the Wallet on Sunday longingly & watched several sails go by ( after popping into Walton for the paper, for the Xword...). I've drunk the last of the Kasteel from last year, so that medicine is gone; shame.

As I have got older I have come to appreciate any sailing boat with an enclosed wheelhouse. It makes most cold weather related problems dissapear.

Us too - we were planning to come down to the club to meet you lot on Sunday but waking up in Brightlingsea and seeing the weather; we headed back up the wallet to Ipswich. 8.5 knots at one point under genoa alone. Sorry we missed you.

That explains why we didn't see either the Pyros or the Morganas in the Ore. We set off in next to no wind on Saturday morning so motored at first. Then we realised we were likely to get to the Ore entrance too early, so decided to turn engine off and hoist sails in order to slow down. Oops, big mistake, 6.5 knots, considerably faster than under engine.

We waited till about an hour after LW then did the boating equivalent of tip toeing in. No less than 0.5 under the keel so not too scary.

Orford was deserted so we took advantage of the second of the two visitors moorings, then pottered about until launching the dinghy.

Outboard happy to take us shoreside. Loverly meal in Jolly Sailor then back to boat. Outboard not happy to take us back to boat, so rowing was necessary. Fortunately tide with us, so not too problematic.

Lazy Sunday, another trip shoreside and a wander round Orford, more patronising of the Jolly Sailor and another trip back to boat.

After studying the weather forecast (why do we bother?) and the tide tables, decision made to leave the Orford mid afternoon. Arrived at the start of the shallow about two hours before HW (a little early) to find the entrance like a washing machine. Hey ho, worth a try. Log reading 6 knots and SOG reading 1.5 knots. But plenty of water and we were making some forward progress so we plodded on.

After Orford Haven, needed a few minutes to recover from the washing machine experience so cut engine and hoisted little gib. 6.5 - 7 knots on the log, so decided mainsail could stay where it was for the moment.

Cracking sail on jib only until wind dropped a little, then hoisted mainsail for the rest of the way home.

What a lovely weekend. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
