Start the engine?

Maybe, on spotting a whale, it would be worth starting the engine. I understand that only harbour porpoises might hear the high freqeuncy used by depth sounders. So an engine and turning propellor would be in the whales hearing range of frequencies. Also fast application of reverse would be available to reduce speed if impact seems near.

I wonder how many whales get clobbered by ships.
