My free AVG 8 stopped working so I wanted to uninstall and reinstall it.
But it wont uninstall. I get the report when trying to uninstall

"Installer initialization failed due to following error:
Error: @AvgErrorCode_0x0253 %FILE% = "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8"
@AvgErrorCode_0x0020"

Any ideas ?

Have you stopped it running before you try to uninstall? Uninstalls sometimes fail because thay can not get exclusive access to a file because a running process is using it.

I'd also go with just running the install again to see if that clears the error. Failing see if you have a system restore point you can go back to before you started uninstalling and try again.

Tried that, but it wont let me do that do that either.
Starts to download but very early in the process Internet Explorer encounters a problem and has to shut down.
So I am stuck with it.
AVG won't open and I cannot uninstall it and I am too scared just to delete the AVG folder for fear of what else it will take with it.
To be fair to AVG, it was working fine, it was me who bvggered it up by inadvertantly changing the date on my computer.
AVG became a bit strange, insisting I updated the databases then when I tried telling me they were up to date.
So I uninstalled and reinstalled AVG. Still not working properly so then I used System Restore.
Still no good, then I noticed that several other programmes with schedules were not behaving. The penny dropped and I noticed the date on the PC had been accidentally changed to August 2008.
Corrected the date change and everything is now fine except AVG.
What a prat!

Have you checked that all the services it requires are stopped? Most of them run silently without any desktop presence. You can check for services in Control panel>Administrative Tools> Services (a sort of cog-wheel icon). I would also have a look at running processes on the task manager. I'd be surprised if you've managed to kill all the services AVG requires to run. No task-bar icon is not an indication in this case.

i use a freeware programme called revo uninstaller which really works well. It initiates the uninstall process allowing the original programme to commence the uninstall and then searches your system for all the little pieces left behind and lists them for removal. You click on what you want removed and it does it for you. It always works well for me
