Just wondering

We're looking to buy a 32/33' sailboat and about how much is it for a couple of coats of anti-foul ?

(just we've never done that before as our current 24' boat came with a copper coated hull)

DIY - so just paying for the paint or paying someone to do the job for you? Already on good condition so you just need a quick run down and slap it on? Or remove the old stuff, fair the surface, prime, and paint?

If you shop around you can get paint for just under £100/tin. One tin probably does about 1 coat on a boat that size. Rollers, tape, sandpaper etc - will easily take a simple DIY job to £250.

Our deep fin keel 33' Elan takes one and a half tins of Shogun Seajet (2.5L tins) for two fairly thin coats applied with foam rollers. A long keel boat may well take more. Another expense is the ludicrously priced special offerings for the prop and saildrive, Not meant to use antifoul on these, but special barnacle food products which seem to be pretty ineffective. Some owners leave the prop bare but I have not found this works either.

Also on Coppercoat which I think works well depending on how old it is and whether it’s been looked after. I look after mine by giving it light abrade each winter and using small packs of Coppercoat to touch up as needed.

Next winter I’m planning to recoat the hull which will take me a day to prep and a day to apply.

If the boat has Coppercoat I’d suggest sticking with it … the cost and effort to strip and prep for conventional antifoul is likely to be similar to replacing and then for the next 5-10 years annual costs will be significantly less. There are differing views on the pros and cons of Coppercoat but amongst the boating professionals in my part of Chichester Habour the view seems to be that it’s a good solution.

I know someone who has a boat in Portsmouth harbour with coppercoat. Lifted boat out after a year and it just required a wipe down to remove slime.

ah nice one and many thanks to everyone for the replies - that's really good to know thanks (and also approx price if paying someone else to do it too Tranona - especially as the boat is currently very far away from us!)

HUGE thanks to you all - that's really helpful

ps - also agree on the Coppercoat - even though our old boat had been done by a previous owener about 10 yrs ago its still doing well.

We did have to do a patch job on the bow last year as I'd got the strop length too short and it had rubbed off some of the cc on the swing mooring, but we bought a patching kit (and thanks so much everyone for the advice on that back then) and even though it was our first time it worked pretty well and had blended brown to green by the end of the season

We did ours just before Christmas, 1 1/2 tins for two coats, did get a price for someone doing it and they quoted £1500 to £2000 to do it, suspect that they were to do far more prep than I did
