Aveiro Portugal a question of anchors

Does anyone know if it's ok to anchor in the baia de San Jacinto, aveiro? Says you can in the almanac!

Yes, we've been there twice recently. The anchorage shown in the Pilot is down the far end but that's now full of moorings. First time we anchored off the airfield but second time we were told to move and it's best not to argue with paratroops. We ended up anchoring behind the green buoy in about 4m to keep clear of the ferry route. Beware when leaving the entrance there can be overfalls on the ebb tide.

We anchored in there a couple of years ago in the N end, there were some moored boats but still plenty of room for 4 or 5 boats to anchor although there may be a bit less room now if there are more moorings in place. I seem to remember a couple of boats anchored just SW of the channel but it is pretty shallow if you go too far.

The main port entrance can be a bit daunting if it is windy and with any swell, we entered in about a F6 NW with 2m swell. However although it looks pretty horrible as you approach our experience was that the swell dimished rapidly as you got towards the entrance and it was certainly much better than it looked from seawards. The entry is pretty deep at 10m or more so the swell does not break unless conditions are much worse and then the port will probably be closed anyway.

Friends on a 33' mono came in directly behind us and they had no problems either, although they did say they probably would not have attempted it had we not been there to give them the conditions nearer the entrance.

A good place to hide if bad weather is forecast and shopping available on shore. Try and time your exit for slack water to minimise conditions as you leave the breakwaters.

Thanks for the info chaps. That's good news! We may do an 'over- nighter' and get further south, depends on the weather but it's a good refuge!
Thanks again.

Further down the coast, we went into Nazare Club rather than the town marina (Capt Mike now retired:), much closer to town with good facilities and friendly folks. If the weather is settled, it's well worth dropping the hook in 15m at Berlenga island for a day or two, you can dinghy into some of the caves and it's a major dive centre. Also possible to anchor in the corner of the breakwater and beach at Peniche if there's no swell.
