Help!!! I'm after a bit of advice currently installing my hydraulic autopilot and I've just realised the vetus helm pump I have does not have the non return valves fitted. So....
Rather than either 1 fork out for a new helm pump, or 2 buy the rather expensive vetus non return valve block. Could I just get 2 standard hydraulic non return valves and fit them into the lines from the helm pump to do the same job for a fraction of the price?

Thanks in advance.

Phil?

A simple non return valve will no work what you need is 2 pilot operated non return valve cross connected.

This is what you need one for each steering pump.

Alas nothing is ever straight forward is it...
1 shiny new helm pump ordered as was cheaper than vetus non return valve assembly (how does that work?)

This is the exact think as the Vetus which vetus just buy in and markup to "marine" prices

This on is 1/4 " bsp and is 31.2 GBP

Just looked at the vetus price 226 GBP is way overpriced. It does include fittings. I found those type of fittings useless

Sorry to revive this thread after 18 months.
I am currently installing a below decks hydraulic autopilot, my issue is the pump (hy-prodrive) has three hydraulic line connections and my Syten steering pump has only two. now do I buy a new vetus steering pump or can I add 1 of these http://www.hycon.co.uk/Products/425/156/VBPDE-1-4-A.html and an external reservoir?
thanks in anticipation.

Hello,

I have a Frances 34 Pilothouse (Victoria 34 with a wheelhouse) and am having issues with my hydraulic steering (air getting into the system and the old ram and T connectors are suspect). It has a 21 year old steering ram of 170ccs and a Raymarine 0.5 reversing pump. My research tells me that the pump should be the Raymarine 1 (not 0.5) version for this ram size.

I cannot find a direct ram replacement of that size, though Vetus do a 152cc ram, which is appropriate for the 0.5 pump.

Question; would this slightly smaller ram be adequate for this yacht with a real World displacement of around 14,000 lbs??? If so, I assume the existing 0.5 reversing pump will be fine?

Many thanks for any advice received

John Willis

Hi,
Try steve@hypromarine.co.uk (very helpful chap), I had the same issues recently, my old ram was not serviceable and had been replaced.
I gave him the old model number and he did the rest, ordered me the replacement ram after checking the complete system setup. I now have a working system.
