Q.a.t. :

Automotive relays in the marine environment, are they :

1. Au fait ?
2. Chocolate teacup territory ?
1.x Somewhere between 1 and 2 ?

Please quantify by giving a value for x.

Thanks,

Boo2

I would say, as with all things electrical, keep them dry and clean and they'll be absolutely fine.

Their suitability all depends upon the environment they'll be in, IMO.

If you can't ensure they'll be kept dry, either improve their housing, or siting, or buy a marine jobby.

Yes or fit in a sealed housing with a cable gland such as one of these:

if used in a very moist environment.

Remeber that under a cars bonnet is perhaps not the most benign working environment. often damp often salty, fairly harse vibration environment. So perhaps a relay sitting on a yacht switchboard is in quite a nice envirnment compared to under the car bonnet.

Depends on the relay and where you fit it.

The Generic Bosch type, a sealed black cube, will do well even in a high threat environment.

The type where you have a monkey metal cap clipped over a base with small tangs will not do so well but keep it dry and warm and maybe 3 to 5 years?

Unless you want to install the thing out on deck (unlikely!), I don't see why it would be in a worse environment than on a car.

Shocked .... Gobsmacked .... I don't believe what I read !

A thread that doesn't say ONLY marine items !!

As another says - given the environment under the bonnet ... salted winter roads, cr*p, all sorts and they keep going ......... why so different in a boats engine box or electrical cabinet ? In fact probably better !

there are loads of these type threads about R_f.
in fact, I suspect alot of us here source our electrical parts down at the dismantlers.

Auto realys will be fine - keep them cosy.
