Just reading the survey which was done on Rogue in 2003.

The surveyor suggests that, because there is an Eberspacher Diesel heater under the aft bunk, there should be an automatic extinguisher fitted....

I can see his point, but it's pretty packed with batteries, heater, pipes etc. under there, so there's not much space, and it's not very deep.

If it was fitted pointing downwards, (as these things seem to be designed for), my impression is that we would end up with a load of powder on the floor, about 2 inches below the nozzle, and not much on the source of the fire.

If it was fitted in the cabin, I can just see someone breaking the phial and it going off by accident.

As it's possible it could be an insurance condition - any ideas?

Cheers

Richard

Have a look at the systems that employ a tube thats lead back and forth over the area, the cannister can be positioned in any convinent location. The system I saw was supplied by a company in Folkestone Kent and was used on battery powered mining locos on a tunnel project.

I have seen these type of systems fitted, they look very simple, a extinguisher cylinder connected to a plastic pipe which melts and releases the extinguishant. The ones that I have seen were made by a company called 'Firetrace'

Don't worry. If one of those things goes off in a confined space it will certainly fill the space up not trickle out and land gently on the floor! An extinguisher is always best aimed at the base of a fire anyway.

I could let you have a 5 Kg firetrace system for a reasonable fee. You do have to mount the bottle vertically but that can be -nearby

I think you'll most probably find that most insurance is only valid if the survey requirements are met.

Just fitted a 2kg auto dry powder.... bit of a squeeze, but it's in.

If that goes off accidentally when we're in bed, I'll be accused of eating too many beans /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

63 euros for the extinguisher. seemed like good value, just a shame that we dont seem to want to use them in the engine room... for good reasons.

Basic powder auto can be mounted on its side or with the spray head pointing up. If it points down it will not go off until the fire is raging since it is the heat which sets it off
