Autohelm 3000 ST with compass frozen .Has anyone dismantled & repaired successfully ?

Our ST3000 heading display froze on the control unit. The problem was that one of (I think) three wires had broken on the fluxgate compass.
I didn't repair it myself, but was told of the problem.

I maintained / repaired my AH1000 on my previous boat.
Common source of problems are bad connection on connector plugs.
Assuming power to unit is ok
If in Standby it will move the arm in and out in response to plus or minus ten then the drive motor is ok.
After connections, compass is next likely culprit.
When you open it up look carefully for water ingress, that will cause tracks in the circuit board to erode.

the flexible ribbon cable that goes between the main board and the compass gimble gets fractures normally right where it bends or gets thicker near the connector plug. Sometimes when powered up you can gently press the cable and it will work again but only to prove a point.
