Help!!! I've scoured this forum and the internet for a manual for my recently purchased preloved Autohelm 1000, and I'm struggling to find a crucial dimension!

I need the length between the pin underneath the auto helm, to the pin on the tiller. One manual I found for an Autohelm AH1000 said it should be "19 inches or 480mm", but the pin is at the end of the autopilot, and mine is about 3/4 of the way down the body (see attached picture) so I'm not convinced this applies to me Then, confusingly, I found another manual for an Autohelm 1000 that said it should be "23.2 inches or 569mm" (see attached picture), but this looked like a much older unit, so I'm not sure if this applies to me either. Clearly there are several version of the Autohelm 1000, and I'm not sure which one I have...

Basically, does anyone a manual/Autohelm 1000 that looks like the one I have, and could they give me this crucial dimension? I'm keen to get this right before I start drilling holes in my GRP and subsequently finding out I've got it horribly wrong!

Many Thanks in advance.

The manual page you show is for the original Nautecn Autohelm but you should be able to find the manual for your model on Raymarine's website.
Sorry I don't recognise it from a view of its bottom but but should find the correct manual listed here:
Tiller Pilots - Box

If the link does not work go to Raymarine's UK website then the support tab, then Manuals and Documentation. Then select Legacy/ retired product documents , then Autopilots and finally Tiller pilots

What a great link, there's quite a few manuals there I've not seen before. Unfortunately, they all have pictures of the pin being at the end of the unit, and therefore all the dimensions don't relate to the version I have...

That is the very original Autohelm dating back nearly 40 years when the company was known as Nautec and is very different from the AH 1000. My guess is that the 480mm is correct as the mounting pin on the AH 1000 is on the end of the casing meaning the distance between the pin and the tiller would be greater.

You can easily check by powering the ram up and stopping at mid point and measuring the distance between the pins.

my recently purchased preloved Autohelm 1000 [...] I need the length between the pin underneath the auto helm, to the pin on the tiller.

I don't understand - if you've got the thing, why don't you measure it? Then you can be certain that the measurement you end up with is for yours, and not some other model.

I have the Autohelm 1000 and the pin at end of case in same area as the cables is correct.

The OP TP having pin in the body is as T says - the older version.

Note : BOTH versions are NAUTECH ..... it was changed by NAUTECH themselves.

I would extend the ram to half its travel ,with the tiller on the center line attach the ram to the pin on the tiller then mark the position of the pivot pin .

Personally I have wasted a lot of time on second hand auto helms but good luck.

You mean as suggested in posts #4&5?

At last somebody comes up with a sensible reply.

I have 3 AH Tiller Pilots ... the AH800 - came with the boat over 20yrs ago. Still perfect working order.
AH1000 I bought to fit to my previous boat but never did ... so that's been with me at least 25 years. Perfect working order.
AH1000 that was bought as not working for parts after I had silly quote from dealer for service !!

Only two items I have replaced on them ... the 12v power plug as the two pin marine plug after so many years said enough is enough ! And the remote cable plug / socket in the 800 and 1000 ... similar situation - old and tired.

Here's my 1000 working yesterday with its cable remote. I had the cable replaced on the remote to allow me to be at mast while still able to control ...

I may not agree with some at times ... but posts 4 + 5 already replied similar ... in fact I was going to post about it - but saw the other two guys had already.
I was simply completing the Lakesailoring for Tranona. It doesn’t count until somebody compliments the 3 person to come up with the correct reply. I’ve been on this forum too long, I can tell.

Something I find interesting ...

Looking at the photo in post #1 ..... the pin for the tiller pilot .... if you look at the end of case where the power and data leads connect - you have the hole ... that is the location of the pin on the usual AH1000.
TBH - I would prefer if the pin was not in that end location as it is a pain to connect data plug with it so close..

Well done.

Hopefully the OP who is new will come back and not only get the answer to his question in triplicate, but will be educated into the arcane rituals of YBW.

I'VE FOUND IT . . . Its a 1000M ( I knew the manual would be on Raymarines website)

Unfortunately the manual is in German, but the required dimension is 58 cm

Link to manual :- Box

A= 58cm
B= 46 cm

And here's the manual in English, confusingly with very slightly different dimensions! (56.9cm vs 58cm).

Box

Thats not the one though it shows this diagram, with the mounting pin at the end

I expect it will be Ok for the operating instructions so should be useful for the Op. (I think it is in the list in my original link, but not checked)
