Easy mistake to misinterpret gravitas over a VHF........I wasn't being terse, rather embarassed, having just failed to raise the HM on ch 80 where I should have been on ch 12 Port Control!
Also I was trying to emulate Lowerstoft Port Control where a previous exchange had gone something like this:
<Lowerstoft Port Control, Lowerstoft Port Control this is Drummond, Drummond over>
<stoft>
What the heck?
<Lowerstoft Port Control this is Drummond, Drummond over>
<stoft>
What, really? Right OK.
<Lowerstoft Port Control Drummond, may we have permission to enter the RNandS dock please over>
<windboat outward bound, proceed on green lights>
Right got you.
<Lowerstoft, Drummond will proceed after windboat clears on green lights, Drummond listening ch 14 out>
....or something very similar!!!!
...and Peter the HM at Southwold is exceptionally welcoming, friendly and helpful. He even had treats for our puppy spaniel! He likes wooden boats, bawleys, smacks and messing about in boats in general. He gave us 1/2 price mooring as we were leaving on the 01:00 HT. He is responsible for the wonderful showers in the harbourmaster's office.
I would not dare to upset such a gentleman and always request permission to enter controlled harbours.

This is not the first time that I've heard that Lowestoft Port Control uses an element of Creativity with their VHF procedure......
