Attempt by our Committee to change the Club rules without notifying the members

How on earth do you come to that conclusion?
We were with a group of model yacht enthusiasts at tea break casually discussing getting people to volunteer for posts in clubs in general & who fouled who in the last race, who had nicked the most cakes & how people with Britpops win most races etc etc. Oh! and the veterans section in Finns- which was more interesting.
I doubt if any others knew what I was talking about when i mentioned the forum ( unless they were also members of club concerned ) Or were even the slightest bit bothered.

All i got from the discussion was that said club re elected their commodore due to fact no one wanted to volunteer for the job

I told you we were not in the least bit interested in NickC

Whats wrong with that??

It just seems very strange. I was a member of a sailing club for several years before being elected onto the Committee although I was never the Commodore. If I had been at any kind of gathering and someone had said to me that my club or the Commodore were being mentioned in disparaging terms on a sailing forum, whether I was an ordinary member or after I was elected, I would not have said "Oh well, please could you pass me the petit fours" unless I felt that discussing same was, somehow, not in my interests.

Unless it was mentioned by a close friend or another committee member, I'd expect a committee member to research the thread before discussing it further - and in any case if it's contentious not then discuss it in open forum - be that at a model boat club or public forum.

I have also served time on a committee - what a thankless task that can be at times ... I still don't discuss what was discussed in committee meetings - even with other club members - only what has already been published in the minutes or brought up in the AGM. I would think it bad form for any committee member to discuss these sorts of issues outside the committee without good reason.

Who said he discussed sensitive committee business?
Oh! I know it is you

Seriously! Should this not be in the lounge or some other forum that I really don't care about and never view. Maybe a forum called "utter nonsense & crap"?

As a weekly, maybe fortnightly, brief browser, it seems strange that it is reaching 700 posts! And yet it is human nature to dip in every now and again just to see the conclusion and maybe, just maybe, learn something.

Bring back Jelly Elly something or other.

I'm not sure how a thread with 700 posts on a public website with thousands (millions?) of people reading it can be classed as one of "those sorts of issues" like committee meetings, published in minutes or subjects brought up at the AGM.

Anyone else pondering that Nick, Daydream and Pugwash are all actually the same user?

Oh heck its all gone surreal again, surely you’re not being serious are you, just trying to provoke the inmates for entertainment are we?

First of all I was SteveEasy, then Daydream Believer, now I am CaptainPugwash. Get with the programme man.

If you had been following the thread closely combined with a small amount of research from other posts you would know where these people come from:
Daydream Believer – St Lawrence, Essex
NickC – Romford, Essex
SteveEasy – Lincolnshire
CaptainPugwash – Suffolk

I have lurked, watching this thread, but not so far commented.

I am definitely coming down on Nick's side. The balance of probabilities seems to me to point to a club being taken over by a cabal / clique who've fallen out with Nick, now to such an extent that they've driven him away from a previously important part of his life, unfairly.

What can Nick can do about it? Flooding the club with new members is unrealistic. Appealing to the ordinary members may be possible, but it would be a long slog. Complaining to the RYA - why not, but I can't see it getting Nick anywhere. Joining the next-nearest club and making new friends, or doing away with club membership altogether? It's the only thing truly in your control, I'm afraid, Nick.

It's not fair or right, but like my Mum said when as a kid I complained that something wasn't fair - "What's not, a black man's bum?" - It's not fair that it rains on my first day off for a month, It's not fair that I don't get paid more. Unfairness is like the weather - part of life's background.

If it happens again, Nick, an earlier approach to ordinary members, through ordinary personal contact, may be more effective. I really do feel for you, but what options do you have?

:encouragement:
FFS I am not Captain Pugwash, SteveEasy or Daydream friggin Believer - got it:encouragement:

Yes, but I work in Romford & you live there. How could we be so close not to have had a secret liaison to plan the whole thing?
Someone will realise the connection I am sure & conclude that the whole thread has been a gigantic con

Exactly as I see it.

If I were Nick the only way I'd like to see the club in question again would be from a B-52, but one should not be battered into silence when a wrong has been done. :encouragement:

Hang on a mo - in a round-about way I backed up your account of the discussion you had with a committee member

As I see it, you mentioned a thread on here - the committee member said they had probs with getting volunteers to be on the committee so had to overstay - and the conversation moved on - exactly as I'd expect it too - I dare say the committee member either already knew about this thread or went and looked it up ...

Whether the committee member is right or wrong in his dealings with Nick - I wouldn't expect him to discuss it outside the committee or at a stretch - a gm at the club .. Such is the life of a committee member ...

I decided a long time ago there are two types of people at clubs;

those who like to go sailing,

and those who like to sit and tell them how they should be sailing.

This means I can do little to moan when people put themselves forward for committees, but there are usually sensible people who overule the prats who just seek a special illuminated Admiral's hat with feathers.

If I lived closer to the club I suppose I'd be one of those seeking my special hat !

As it is I just go sailing and help out decent members as & when I can, I think ' keeping one's head down ' is the term.

Like any politicians, anyone expressing a wish to be one should be automatically ruled out - or probably shot.
