Attempt by our Committee to change the Club rules without notifying the members

Paragraph from our Club's original rules as all members have had hard copy off for years:

Now the same paragraph from a recent copy of the rules emailed to me by a Committee member:

The Club Committee may refuse membership, or remove it, only for good cause such as conduct or character likely to bring the Club or sport into disrepute. Appeal against refusal or removal may be made by members.​

Anyone notice the small but important difference? Notice the second from last word has changed from 'to' to 'by'.

Luckily many members still have the original unadulterated version.

Any rule changes would have to go before an AGM for a vote after having issued formal notice of any changes possibly one month prior

Worth a punt before calling for an emergency general meeting or a vote of no confidence anyway!

I did wonder if it might be a newer version of the rules which hadn't been sent out to members yet, in which case it could be as you say. However the document has a date in it's title which matches the date of the original version that all the members have.

Twenty five years of history, have made many good friends during that time at the Club.

Also I don't like letting bullies get away with anything. And most of all I will not tolerate deception or being lied to, that's not unreasonable is it?

if it looks like it is going to be a train wreck then it wont be a good club to be in
or is it possible to ask for a vote of confidence in the committee

You need to see what the rules arre on changing the rules. Normally rules require a majority of members present at a GM to either introduce new ones or change existing ones. It is normal for general committees to have the power to suspend or expel members, but subject to prior notification and an opportunity for representation. A defined majority of the committee is usually. required

OP has been emailed a copy of the "Rules". This copy is different to the rules as published ina booklet. This strikes me that the emailed copy is not a true copy of the rules.
As said already rules as part of the constitution can only be amended by majority vote at AGM.
Very dry boring business but when the action is needed everything must be correct. But for yourself "gone " might be the best place to be. good luck olewill

This may be a typo - so first, ask the committee member: "why the difference".

No point in going to war over a typo . . .

Now, if it was not a mistake, that's another matter!

I've seen too many destructive boardroom battles over mistakes in understandings . . .

Lazy Kipper....my exact thoughts. I sail in an area where there are almost no new sailors and at the last meeting about a meeting there was nobody under 30 and we still managed to have a row about what should "go through the committee" I just get on sailing and enjoy the water. enuf said!!!

you can belittle it if you like, but swapping those simple little 2 letter words has a massive impact on the meaning.

I have been involved in a couple of removals from office within the club committee (but fortunately not expelled from the club, that's their choice) and it's all down to the letter of the constitution and even those can be interpreted differently.

I feel for the OP

In my view there's two things he could do
1) walk - there's loads of other clubs around, he may have made friends at the current one, but there's no reason they can't remain friends or even move with him - the committee & club would look pretty sad if everyone else left....
2) fight - that involves lots of work rallying the other members of the club and realising you need a significant majority and a willingness to put their head above the parapet - many will be members for a quiet life and not want to get involved - it's possible to overturn a whole committee, call an EGM, highlight the wrongdoings and remove them from office - create the new committee and move on. Lots of work and a lot of uncertainty but unless the OP is willing to go this far then (IMHO) there's no point in starting.
