We don't know the reason for the commodore being re-elected despite being required to standdown - but it doesn't sound normal
Earlier this year i met a committee member of the club & mentioned this forum thread.
I asked why the commodore had been re elected & his reply was " We simply do not have committed members coming forward to take the posts "
I did not query the matter further but I do know this to be a problem in lots of clubs. It is easy to say " So & so offered" but the operative term in the reply was " committed".
Normally clubs ask for proposals prior to an election & if no one comes forward then they have a problem & have to twist the rules rather than stay without anyone. "Spur of the moment proposals" are not always a good thing. I have seen cases where the candidate just disappeared.
As for a vote for an officer with no challenger. here is an example:-
In our club the candidate still needs a quorum vote to get the job. Once we had a person stand for commodore who seemed quite good to me, so they got my vote. However, they lost & now I have had experience (in another committee)of the person I am glad they did not get it. Sometimes the ruling hierarchy do know more about the candidate than the membership so it might seem odd that they lost the vote, but possibly sensible in the long run.
