Attempt by our Committee to change the Club rules without notifying the members

We don't know the reason for the commodore being re-elected despite being required to standdown - but it doesn't sound normal

Earlier this year i met a committee member of the club & mentioned this forum thread.
I asked why the commodore had been re elected & his reply was " We simply do not have committed members coming forward to take the posts "
I did not query the matter further but I do know this to be a problem in lots of clubs. It is easy to say " So & so offered" but the operative term in the reply was " committed".
Normally clubs ask for proposals prior to an election & if no one comes forward then they have a problem & have to twist the rules rather than stay without anyone. "Spur of the moment proposals" are not always a good thing. I have seen cases where the candidate just disappeared.

As for a vote for an officer with no challenger. here is an example:-
In our club the candidate still needs a quorum vote to get the job. Once we had a person stand for commodore who seemed quite good to me, so they got my vote. However, they lost & now I have had experience (in another committee)of the person I am glad they did not get it. Sometimes the ruling hierarchy do know more about the candidate than the membership so it might seem odd that they lost the vote, but possibly sensible in the long run.

Interesting DB I did wonder if you had ever got a chance to chat to your friend on this Committee. So did that Committee member happen to proffer any explanation as to why they deem it acceptable to completely ignore Club rules and refuse to allow Ordinary Members a vote on the issue? The rules are there to prevent just such a rogue Committee acting like petty dictators.

Normally yes, but not here... As members were not informed of the AGM an appropriate period in advance they were unable to provide the required 28-days notice to stand for election or raise any proposals!

What is the current state of affairs Nick? Are you still involved with the club?

Still waiting for the Committee to abide by the Club rules and allow Ordinary Members a vote on the issue.

At the moment I have been half-expelled from the Club; that is expelled by the Committee but not by the members, they haven't been allowed a vote on the subject. As you can imagine I have not been provided with a membership form to rejoin this year!

Have to be a little careful what news I reveal here as it is no doubt being read by the Committee in question. PM me if you have any questions which I may not be able to answer in public.

We are both in a model yacht club.
There was a group discussion about increasing membership & finding officers for various clubs.
I mentioned the thread & asked if he had seen it & i asked if commodore had done an extra year ( Our SC had the same issue, although with less animosity) His reply was along the lines I quoted earlier- --nobody prepared to volunteer !!!!!

You could have downloaded the membership renewal form from the website

I guess you will still be waiting for the form and the vote in 5 years time.

If he has not/ does not renew his membership for this year I guess he will be considered to no longer be a member and will then have to re-apply for membership with proposer and seconder and acceptance by the "committee". The latter being until to happen even if he can find a couple of others prepared to stick their necks out as proposer and seconder.

Glad I belong to a decent small club with no 'Ya ya's' and no 'politicians'.

Two quotes come to mind:

“I sent the club a wire stating, PLEASE ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION. I DON'T WANT TO BELONG TO ANY CLUB THAT WILL ACCEPT ME AS A MEMBER.”
― Groucho Marx, Groucho and Me

“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.”
― Groucho Marx

Just sayin'...

Yes but in their world I have been expelled so they can still throw it in the bin!
Without rereading this whole thread, I cannot remember you ever being informed in writing that you had been expelled. If that is the case and they never put pen to paper, then send in the renewal membership form. For the cost of a stamp and signed for advice, it will be worth it for knowing they have again broken their own rules yet again by not following the rules. Just remind them they failed to send the renewal form, hence the downloaded one sent by post - ignore the fact they think they have thrown you out. 10 days after being signed for, send a reminder asking for a responce to your renewal and remind them of their illegal activities that broke the club rules.

Or alternatively. just give it up as a lost cause, and go somewhere else.

There was a letter but I don't seem to have a scanned in copy available, hence probably why it never got posted on this thread.

Will dig it out, scan it in, anonymize it and post copy.

Letter of expulsion below.

Remember that the ‘opportunity to explain your conduct’ is a bit of a red-herring as no specific accusations had been produced nor any supporting evidence.
