Very rational thoughts but may I add one more? The snubber can be difficult to get off. If you put the pin of a bow shackle through the eye on the snubber and tie your line to the shackle with two round turns and a bowline then your chafe problem is solved, should not slide and if there is a bit of wear it will be at a slighly different spot next time you tie the line to the shackle. The big bonus come when you come to free the hook from the chain: Pull on chain to take load off chain hook and then when you jiggle the line the shackle will help the hook come off (and if you are sensible leave the other end of the line still attached while you jiggle, the hook comes free when you least expect it to!)
