I am considering a move to Athens. I would be grateful of any inside information as to what is available and facilities, contact details etc.
I have been to Kalamaki a few times, I have googled them but cannot find their website, if they have one.
Zea seems rather expensive, though perhaps not as basic as kalamaki. However I am keen on wintering out of the water which Kalamaki seem to cater for.
To be honest its just for the ease of flights really. Are there any others worth consideration?

Thanks

Olympic is expensive too.

Much cheaper options are avaible on Salamis, just opposite the Piraeus shore. Wooden sled pull-out near Salamis town, or a large travel hoist at Ambelaika boatyard on the E coast of Salamis. These are what I'd call 'ethnic' choices.

If you're prepared to accept some travel a lot more options open up in much more pleasant locations. Top of my list comes Kalamata (4 hours, regular buses, scruffy but lively town).

Patras (2 hours regular trains, large town with strong yot bureaucracy - no personal experience of wintering there), Porto Heli (4 hours by less regular buses, small holiday town), Poros (2 hours by ferry, expat community) are also possibilities.

My web site gives some more detail

We spent 2 years at Porto Heli on a swinging mooring in summer and ashore over the winter. As well as the bus there is a fast ferry service to Athens (2 hours). I found the yard to be very friendly and helpful although some will disagree.
Poros has moorings and at least 2 boatyards on the mainland opposite.
For winters ashore there is a good and reasonably priced boatyard at Sousaki, close to the east side of the Corinth canal.

Send me a PM for telephone numbers and contact details.

Hi,
I would go for Poros. We were at Olympic Marine last year and it was veeeeery expensive. We were charged € 4500 for liftout, 4 months on the hard, and launch (54' boat). They also charge you extra if you work yourself on your boat on the hard.

Think we have spoken before when we were enroute to Athens but ended up in Preveza. I don't think we could get in Porto Kheli at the time, or there was some complication.

Poros, I shall try and find some info on the marina, unless somebody has any contact details.
Thanks all for replies so far, I am away for a week in Ireland now with little or no internet connection so cannot reply until back.

Steve,
I remember now - you wanted some work done and the yard at Porto Kheli was on holiday or something. As far as I am aware of, there is no marina at Poros, various people rent moorings and there are 2 or 3 boatyards who haul out yachts. There is a forum member who keeps his boat at Poros, his username is rtboss1, it might be worth asking him.

I've had my boat hauled out over winter in the Aegina yard run by Jordan Kanonis and was very happy with the service. He uses trailers to haul boats and is very efficient and can handle up to about 60 tons. There is a yard next to his which uses a travelhoist. I'm not aware of anywhere safe to leave a boat afloat at Aegina, but Jordan did offer me reduced rates to keep my boat in his yard while I returned to the UK during the summer.

i would suggest to put a boat on dry at nea perama ( 30 km south of piraeus) and the trasport is with bus or small train
the cost for 37' is about an euro 170 / monthly, also there is facilities for repairs if needed
recently launched my boat after long stay there and presently move to methana - beatufull spot !
in case need more info, just advise

Hi Henry you are right about Poros, no marina and very few spaces on moorings. I may be able to find a private mooring that could be used .I have also used Jordons yard in Souvalas
Aigina and can say that he was very helpful and good value ,mind you it was four years ago.cheers bobt

wouldn`t want to swap the IOnian for Athens although I take your point about acces by air.
There is a good yard in Aegina and also people on the yacht Valentine who operate a charter bus there who can give you loads of info.

Yes that was me, went up to Preveza in the end because, as you say, he was on holiday at the time, or away or something.
Athens was just a thought as we are probably going to circumnavigate the Pelopponese this Summer and it would be a good place to leave the boat.

A yard is actually okay because we leave her out of the water most of the time, but i would like to be somewhere a little easier to get to. Preveza can be a bit difficult, particularly out of season and expensive travel if you want to visit regularly on short breaks.

Sorry for digging out such an old thread, but I just wanted to let everybody know that Sousaki yard does not exist any more. On the way to Preveza with a rented car two weeks ago, I did a small "reconnaissance mission". No infrastructure or construction is left and the area is completely open. I don't know when they closed and why.

Its all a matter of taste. It would be highly foolish to leave a boat there unattended. And right next doors stands the worst refinery I've seen in Europe. With such a strong smell...

But I agree, I'd rather prefer that those who "abandon" their yacht on a town quay for free and take up valuable space for visitors park here! :)
