Hi, I've been down this road before on a refurb I did.

The two bolts are behind the backrest , to get at them you have to remove the vertical carpet piece forward of the backrest, you will then find a pice of plywood glued to the fibreglass base area, tear it off, it will be scrap but ou can save the foam backed carpet if you use a wide scraper. You will then reach inside to see the bolt heads or screws that hold the backrest to the moulding.

As soon as I saw this post I knew what you were talking about and your not the first to ask me that question.

Erm... I take it you mean the base of the navigator seat?

On the phantom46 there is a panel to the right of the nav seat base, looks like your nav seat base obscures the panel you need to remove,, so yes I'd remove the nav seat base first then the vertical piece of carpet.

Paul, I'm sorry to be a bit thick on this, but I removed the carpet that is vertically around the nav seat base/pedestal (part of which can be seen in the pic, just left of the backrest), but is there another vertical piece of carpet you refer to?

I think there should be a piece of vertical carpet or maybe vynyl covered panel at 45degree from the rear of the backrest. From memory there were two wing nuts on the 46.

I think it's different in a 43 as I can't think of an another place where such panel could be. I didn't check the second cabin ceiling, though. It has a vinyl panel roughly at the right place.

Scej: yep, a 43 you moved from Lymington to Swanwick for me last March/April.

An update on this: I contacted Fairline about the issue and they had a few suggestions, which didn't help in the end. They also couldn't tell whether there is a hole in the mould beneath the seat allowing access from the second cabin ceiling. Due to various time restrictions in getting to the boat and allowing time for reupholstering the sofas, I have abandoned this upgrade for now and probably do it over the next winter.

So as far as I can tell, the only possibility to access the bolts is through the 2nd cabin ceiling. I will post an update later when I get this confirmed.

Going thru the ceiling is the easiest thing in the world Scubaman. The ceiling panels are 6mm ply held on with 3M dualock. Just pull them down and they "pop" off. Easiest way is to remove a light, then put your hand in the hole and pull the panel down. Incredibly easy

Yep, thanks, I'll do this when I go to the boat on Thursday. I did this in the saloon in Feb when I removed the ceiling panels to do a few checks for the new LED's. I ordered a couple of Quick's, btw.

For future reference to anyone wondering how to remove the pictured backrest, I can now confirm that the access to the bolts to remove it is gained through removing a panel in the second cabin ceiling. Easy peasy... :)
