At last:The real truth about 'performance' saily boats.

it 's confession time: I used to own a mirror dingy, and then a Cowes punt with gaff rigg; many many many years ago.

That was before I got some sense and ditched the dinghy, and the horse ; got A Mini 850 for £35, and a Dory with 20hp 2str Johnson OB.......

....and the rest was history as they say.

Tacking through 90 deg is a very honest appraisal of a typical sailboat if you take leeway in account, if you want my opinion.

So why all the pretence then? You've owned two sailing boats - you obviously do understand the dynamics of a sailing boat but equally obviously don't like sailing so don't do it. I would much rather fly across the Atlantic than cross it in a small boat, whether powered by sails or an engine. I can cope with short passages on a displacement MoBo before I get bored. On a faster MoBo I enjoy the thrill of the speed for a while - how long depends on the weather and sea-state usually. Having said that I don't get orgasmic every time I get on a sailboat either.

That's me but others are different. I can't see the need to analyse it to death, never mind argue about the logic of a pleasure pursuit.

Agree with everything you have said.
I've never been on a sailboat, only mucked around on a few dinghy's, think amazons and swallows.
what do I know about sailboats? absolutely nothing...but I never knew they couldn't make good progress to windward.

Do I have hidden agenda? No.
Am I dissing sailboats? No

Jeez, my apologies to all the super sensitive Raggies.

I am now enlightened, and know what to expect!:p

Bemused is the phrase you're looking for - I struggle with the concept of someone who has owned two sailing boats, including a Mirror dinghy, and who knows nothing about sailboats. I'm still not clear why you think they can't make good progress to windward - of course they can. A mirror dinghy can so I don't know what you were doing with it and it would appear you didn't either.

What exactly is wrong with Raggies, are they all suffering from PMS ?
The last time I visited our local yacht club, whoops sorry Royal yacht club, I found a group of stuck up 'chippy chavs' with pretensions above their station in life.
All I can say is get a life; a set of golf clubs or a sail doesn't make you into a gentleman, manners do!

Just look at the conversation from the original sailing post I cut and copied from:

If you trouble yourself to actually read Post # 8 (my first chance to reply after half a dozen peeps, including yourself, had thought it an interesting enough thread) you will see that I REPLIED IN FULL DETAIL TO YOUR QUESTION!

So, if questions about actual sailing are too "daft" to raise on a sailing forum, what do you think IS a good question to ask?
A pompous and arrogant reply from you.
The question "about actual sailing" which you posted was an elementary evening class question which has been covered on here many times.
The fact that you asked the question without the necessary information to provide an answer suggests that you didn't even understand the question or how to pose it properly. No disgrace in that but it's probably why someone asked if you want us to prepare your passage plan for you.

I think mobo owners are much nicer people, that's been my personal experience.:o

As a frequent reader of both sailing forums and this one, I would agree that the standard of discussions on the mobo forum is mostly higher, with Scuttlebutt becoming too personal too often. Unfortunately I don't think you have helped the mobocracy cause with this thread......

Like it or not, this is one of the minority forums & smaller forums always tend to be more polite & friendly. The corollary being that the lounge, which is much more popular is also much more likely to be aggressive or attract trolls.

A big trawler yacht like the diesel duck will have twice the internal volume, doesn't heel over, doesn't pitch, will sail downwind and on a beam reach, can go direct to destination ........

Sounds damn boring to me FWIW my raggie has been recorded on my GPS as over 8Kts to windward, in conditions when MOBO's stayed tucked up in harbour.

Each to thier own, maybe you should tell the Americas Cup guys with thier hydrofoiling cats that they cann't sail to windward....

(I think I'm feeding a troll here)

What an odd thread?

There are many types of boats, and each has advantages or disadvantages. I enjoy a good thrash around at high speed on a mobo, but I wouldn't wish to do it for too long, and I wouldn't wish to be paying the fuel bill to do it.

So I like to potter slowly, but silently on my little rag and stick boat.

But that doesn't mean I go around telling everyone that is what they should do. Why would you?

The main thing is there are lots of different types of boats and different types of boating. As long as you have the right boat for you and are using it the way you want to and having fun on the water, that is all that matters.

Lets all enjoy our boating, and be polite to each other on the water.

P.S I have yet to meet a "bad" boater on any sort of boat, so perhaps they are all nice up here?
