I've got a KAD 44 which I thought I'd ironed out all the issues with but just when things are going good...

An intermittent problem has developed when putting the drive to astern - I click the shift to reverse and nothing happens. It will either then kick in by itself after several seconds or I give it a little bit of revs and it will engage with a clunk. . It initially happened after the maintenance was carried out in March and the cables were changed and the engineer went back and adjusted something or other ( the cables I think) although not sure what exactly as the controls are fly by wire.

This solved the issue however it's just started again. I spoke to the engineer who seems to think there isn't much more adjustment he can do so it must be something else.

When I check forwards and reverse as part of my start up checks it always works fine but seems to play up when trying to back down in to my berth which a small I'm sure you can appreciate with a boat one side and a pontoon the other isn't ideal.

I read in the manual about calibrating the control. Is this something which may help? Any other suggestions?

Cheers

On my KAD300's, with the engine not running, you can engage gears once you hit the unlock button.

Put her into F - N - R and see if you can hear the actuator engaging in a timely manner.

After that, if you can get the boat out of the water easily (or if not, remove the out-drive cover, trim her up and have someone in the water to look at the gear assembly), do the same, and check that the gears are engaging fully.

Initial symptom would tell me that the cable does indeed need adjusting at the out-drive end... this is easy and i've done it for friends in the water.

After that, it could be an old cable stretched to the max, hence not much more adjustment can be done.

Worse case is that your cone is worn. This means re-honing or replacement.

One of my actuators packed in 2 years ago. As a precaution I also changed the 2 gear cables while I was at it... was an easy job, but it could be a difficult one if the actuator is in a bugger of a place (mine weren't, thankfully)

That's great, thanks for the pointers. Certainly gives me something to try.

Strange thing is it's so intermittent and no matter how much I purposely try to get it to play up by flicking from N R, N R it's always fine then it will do it when I least expect it ;)

I know the cables were new in March when it was serviced and there wasn't a sniff of the problem before hand so must be something to do with that.

Cheers

Remove the shift cable from the actuator , start the engine in neutral position , use grips or pliers , push and pull the cable in both directions , you will be engaging forward and reverse manually, take note of the time it takes to engage.
If there isn’t still a delay the cone clutch is worn.

Well my engineers had a look at this issue and seemed to think the cable was past it's best so replaced it. No difference. Most of the time it works absolutely fine then out of the blue there will be a really long delay when I put in to reverse.

I'm guessing that points towards the clutch cone, anyone know what that's likely to cost to replace?
